Public Warning from Social Health Authority on Fraudulent Activities
The Social Health Authority (SHA) has issued a public warning to Kenyans about an increasing number of fraudsters impersonating its staff and deceiving members of the public. The notice, dated November 6, 2025, highlights a growing concern over criminals who claim they can assist with registration or expedite SHA services in exchange for money.
In a statement signed by Chief Executive Officer Dr Mercy Mwangangi, the authority expressed deep sadness and concern over reports that some members of the public have been defrauded by individuals pretending to be SHA employees. These fraudsters often approach people, claiming they can help with registration or update personal details for a fee.
The agency emphasized that trust in its staff is crucial, and it is distressing that dishonest individuals are exploiting this trust for their own benefit. SHA clarified that its employees never request money for services or personal information, including M-Pesa PINs.
Victims or anyone approached by suspected fraudsters are urged to report the matter immediately to the police and to SHA through its hotline at 147 or via the email address [email protected]. The notice stated, “Your safety, dignity, and confidence in our healthcare system matter deeply to us.” The authority also mentioned that it is working to protect communities from these malicious acts.
Key Clarifications from SHA
SHA outlined several important clarifications to ensure the public is well-informed:
- Registration is Free: Kenyans should not pay anyone who claims they can assist with registration or update personal details.
- Official Channels for Registration: Registration can be done through the USSD code *147#, or via the web portals www.afyayangu.go.ke and www.sha.go.ke.
- Assisted Registration: Available only through recognized channels, such as county offices, Huduma Centres, and locally identified Community Health Promoters wearing branded vests.
- The authority stressed that payment of SHA contributions is only conducted through the official M-Pesa business number 200222 or designated banks communicated by SHA.
Important Safety Measures
Members of the public were cautioned against sharing their PINs or handing over their phones to anyone claiming to help with registration. SHA noted that all official outreach or registration drives are announced exclusively through verified channels, local authorities, and the media.
Dr. Mwangangi advised the public not to pay or share personal information with anyone claiming to be from SHA. She further encouraged Kenyans to report any suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest police station.
Commitment to Transparency and Security
SHA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that access to social health insurance services remains transparent, safe, and free from fraud. The authority continues to work closely with relevant stakeholders to safeguard the interests of the public and maintain the integrity of its services.
