Democracy Cup 2026 Champions to Face Sunderland in International Friendly
The organisers of the annual Democracy Cup have announced that the 2026 champions will face English Premier League side Sunderland in an international friendly match in England. This exciting development was revealed during a special event held on Wednesday evening at Parliament’s D.F. Annan Auditorium in Accra, where sponsors and partners of the 2025 edition were honoured.
The partnership between the Democracy Cup and Sunderland Football Club has been facilitated through the collaborative efforts of Primeval Media Limited, the event’s organisers, and the Office of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin. The English club has a unique connection with Ghana, thanks to former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, who played for Sunderland during the 2010–2011 season.
Henry Asante Twum, who moderated the ceremony, shared the news with the audience after receiving approval from the Speaker of Parliament. “Through the efforts of the organisers, Primeval Media Limited, and the Office of the Right Honourable Speaker, we have secured a partnership with Sunderland Football Club in England. So, the winner of the next edition will travel to England,” Asante Twum announced.
As part of the agreement, Sunderland presented a framed number three jersey to Speaker Alban Bagbin, symbolising his position as the third most powerful person in Ghana’s political hierarchy.
A Platform for Unity and Democracy
The Democracy Cup, launched in 2024, was created to promote peace, unity, and democratic participation through the power of football. It is part of Parliament’s broader initiative to use sports as a tool for civic engagement and national cohesion.
In September, Hearts of Oak emerged victorious in the 2025 edition of the tournament after defeating Great Olympics 1–0 at the University of Ghana Stadium. The Phobians reclaimed the title after losing to Asante Kotoko in the inaugural final in 2024.
Asante Kotoko, the winners of the first edition, represented Ghana in the United States, where they faced Major League Soccer side D.C. United in Washington. Organisers have also expressed interest in sending Hearts of Oak to Germany or the United States ahead of the next tournament.
Future Plans and Excitement
With the 2026 edition on the horizon, fans are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to see the champion team take on Sunderland in England. This international match not only highlights the growing global reach of the Democracy Cup but also strengthens ties between Ghanaian football and the wider world.
The event continues to serve as a platform for promoting democratic values and fostering unity through sports. As the Democracy Cup evolves, it remains committed to using football as a means to inspire and engage communities across Ghana and beyond.
