Enhanced Partnership Between Joint Expeditionary Force and Ukraine
Defence ministers from the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), a northern European multinational coalition, have recently met with their Ukrainian counterparts in Norway. This meeting marked the beginning of an enhanced partnership aimed at strengthening Euro-Atlantic security in the Nordic-Baltic region.
The collaboration is considered a significant step forward in reinforcing regional stability. UK Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “This is a powerful signal to Putin and any other would-be aggressors that JEF is stronger than ever. More united than ever, more innovative than ever, more flexible in our operational responses than ever.”
Established in 2014, the JEF is a UK-led multinational force composed of 10 European countries. The initiative has grown significantly over the years, reflecting the evolving security landscape in Europe.
As part of this new partnership, the coalition aims to learn from Ukraine’s battlefield experience. The JEF will provide training to the Ukrainian armed forces and work together on several critical areas, including protecting underwater infrastructure, developing drone technology, improving battlefield medicine, and countering disinformation.
Ukrainian Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal highlighted the importance of accessing European technologies and production capacities. He stated, “From partners including JEF countries, Ukraine seeks access to European technologies and production capacities on the basis of which we could launch joint manufacturing.”
Shmyhal added, “This modern weaponry will not only defend Ukraine now, it will guarantee Europe’s security for years to come and reliably protect its eastern flank from permanent Russian aggression.”
This meeting comes in the wake of the conclusion of Tarassis, the coalition’s largest-ever military operation. The two-month-long exercise across the Nordic-Baltic region involved more than 1,700 British personnel alongside JEF allies.
In response to reports of undersea cable damage in the Baltic Sea earlier this year, the multinational defence force activated a reaction system known as Nordic Warden. This system is designed to track potential threats to undersea infrastructure and monitor the Russian shadow fleet.
