Arrests Made in Connection with Chief Imam’s Murder
The Kwara State Police Command has made significant progress in the investigation into the murder of the Chief Imam of Sokunkpan village. Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, which took place in the Edu Local Government Area of the state.
According to the police spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the incident occurred on November 4, 2025, around 9:30 p.m. The tragedy began following the death of a 25-year-old man named Ibrahim Gana, who had been admitted to a hospital in the area. His brothers, Mohammed Shaba and Mahmud Gana, allegedly accused the village’s Chief Imam, Alhaji Abdullahi Audu, of being responsible for his death.
In response to this accusation, the suspects mobilized several individuals and launched an attack on the Chief Imam using offensive weapons, resulting in his death. The police acted swiftly, leading to the arrest of four suspects, while efforts continue to apprehend others involved in the attack.
Ejire-Adeyemi stated that the command has initiated a full investigation into the incident and assured the public that justice will be served. “Four suspects have been arrested, and the command has commenced a full investigation into the incident. We assure the public that justice will be served,” she said.
Condemnation of Jungle Justice
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, strongly condemned the act of jungle justice and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands. He described such behavior as “criminal and punishable under Nigerian law.”
Ojo emphasized that no one has the right to take another person’s life under any guise. “Resorting to mob action only creates more tragedy and chaos,” he said. He further stressed that the police command will not tolerate acts of lawlessness and that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
Appeal for Public Cooperation
The police boss also urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities by providing useful information that could aid the investigation. “We appeal to members of the public to report any suspicious activity or individuals to the nearest police station or through the command’s designated emergency channels,” he added.
Ojo assured residents of Kwara State that the police remain committed to ensuring peace, safety, and order across all communities, particularly in Edu LGA, where the incident occurred. “The Kwara State Police Command under my leadership will continue to uphold professionalism, integrity, and accountability in all its operations,” the CP affirmed.
Ongoing Investigation
As the investigation continues, the police are working diligently to gather evidence and identify all those involved in the attack. The arrests of the four suspects mark a critical step forward in the case, but the authorities are determined to bring all perpetrators to justice.
The community is being encouraged to remain vigilant and support the ongoing efforts of the police. With the cooperation of the public, the authorities hope to restore peace and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
