Accra, Nov. 6 – A notable initiative has been launched to address “period poverty” and promote environmental sustainability in Ghana. The initiative, called the “Pure Pad” pilot project, is being supported by TexStyles Ghana Ltd (TSG), a leading textile manufacturing company known as GTP. This project is a collaborative effort with several partners including the Landfills2Landmarks Foundation, Grace Presbyterian Church, Akropong District, and Amor Europe.
The “Pure Pad” project aims to introduce reusable sanitary pads made entirely from cotton fabric sourced from TSG’s post-production off cuts. According to a release, 2,500 young girls will benefit from this initiative. Additionally, 50 local micro-enterprises such as church groups, women’s cooperatives, and other community organizations will be trained to manufacture these pads. Furthermore, 40 tonnes of textile off cuts will be diverted from landfills, contributing to environmental conservation efforts.
“This is more than just a product; this is a statement that women deserve dignity and the planet deserves care,” the release stated.
The project was officially launched on October 5 at the Grace Presbyterian Church in Akropong, located in the Eastern Region. Attendees included notable figures such as Madam Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Aide and Advisor to President John Dramani Mahama and Board Chair of Landfills2Landmarks, Mr. Samuel Awuku, Member of Parliament for Akuapem North Constituency, Mrs. Jane Savage, CEO of Pure Amore Pads, UK, Jonathan Sait, CEO of Sait Recycling, the Queen Mother of Akropong, and Mr. Samuel Ofori-Gyampoh, Co-Founder of Landfills2Landmarks.
Mr. Reuben Sam, Marketing Manager of the GTP brand, emphasized that the initiative aligns with the brand’s purpose. He stated:
“This initiative will help keep the girl child in school, giving them the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills to pursue their dreams. Providing the cotton fabrics for the production of reusable sanitary pads is our way of offering freedom, dignity, and confidence to all the beneficiaries.”
He further added, “With the launch of Pure Pad, TSG once again demonstrates its commitment to corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability.”
GTP is an indigenous textile brand that is designed, printed, distributed, and marketed in Ghana. The company has ambitions to expand globally. In August 2022, GTP repositioned its brand to bring Premium African Fashion to the world. It changed its tagline from “Timeless” to “Life.Styled” to reflect its mission of providing quality, authentic, fashionable, African-heritage fabrics that mirror African-inspired designs and stories.
