The Alumni Association of the University of Abuja Calls for Transparent and Merit-Based VC Appointment
The Alumni Association of the University of Abuja has emphasized the need for a transparent, fair, and honest approach in the ongoing selection process for the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor for the institution. This call comes as the university prepares to welcome a new leader who will shape its academic direction, administrative leadership, and institutional culture.
Dr. Rauf Olaiya Sarafadeen-Kunle, the National Publicity Secretary of the Association, issued a statement on Thursday morning from Abuja, urging the Governing Council of the University and key stakeholders to ensure that the selection process is credible, merit-based, and free from external interference. He stressed that the outcome of the process must reflect transparency and be perceived as fair and legitimate by all stakeholders.
“The Council must resist all external pressures, undue influences, or any attempt to manipulate the outcome of the selection process. The integrity of the University of Abuja is far more important than the ambition of any individual or interest group,” the statement read in part.
Concerns Over External Interference
The Alumni Association also raised concerns about potential disruptions from the Federal Ministry of Education, warning that past interferences have undermined administrative stability without due process. The association alleged that such actions have left negative precedents in the institution’s history and could hinder its growth and development.
In response, the association called on the Ministry to refrain from actions that could derail the university’s progress. It highlighted the importance of maintaining a stable and efficient administrative framework to support the institution’s long-term goals.
Emphasis on Home-Grown Leadership
While reaffirming its commitment to fairness and institutional loyalty, the Alumni Association expressed strong support for the appointment of a home-grown professor as the next Vice-Chancellor. The association argued that the University of Abuja has produced world-class scholars, administrators, and researchers who have demonstrated loyalty and made significant contributions to its progress.
“It is only natural that such individuals, who understand the University’s history, challenges, structures, and potentials, be given due consideration for its highest leadership position,” the statement said.
The association clarified that its position is not based on sentiment but on the belief that internal continuity and familiarity with the university’s system will enhance effective leadership and sustainable growth.
Qualifications Must Be Prioritized
While emphasizing the value of being “home grown,” the association also stressed that the next Vice-Chancellor must be the most qualified, competent, and administratively capable among the applicants. The statement outlined several essential qualities for the role:
- Academic excellence
- Administrative experience
- Visionary leadership
- Impeccable character
- A proven track record of service to the University community
“Only such a person can take the University of Abuja to its next phase of development,” the statement noted.
Call for Stability and Unity
The Alumni Association urged members of the University community, including staff, students, and alumni, to remain calm and avoid actions that could destabilize the process. It emphasized that peace and stability must remain the priority throughout the selection period.
The group also praised the outgoing administration for its contributions and encouraged the incoming leadership to build on existing achievements while driving innovation, discipline, and national relevance.
Commitment to Institutional Integrity
Finally, the association reaffirmed its commitment to defending the integrity of the institution and ensuring that the University of Abuja continues on a path of meritocracy, accountability, and academic excellence.
