A Unique Escape in the Heart of Greenland
Nestled in the remote landscape of East Greenland, the Floating Glacier Hut offers an experience unlike any other. For those seeking complete isolation and a connection with nature, this unique accommodation is a dream come true. Surrounded by towering mountains and endless snow, it provides a serene escape from the modern world.
The hut is described as “one of the world’s wildest Airbnbs” and has captured the attention of travelers and media alike. Its location on a floating deck in an isolated fjord makes it a one-of-a-kind destination. The structure is hexagonal in shape and firmly anchored to nearby rocks using two ropes, ensuring stability even in the harshest conditions.
One of the most remarkable features of the hut is its glass ceiling, which allows for stunning views of the sky and stars. Visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of their surroundings while being completely immersed in the environment. Activities such as glacier walking, ice caving, and fishing are available, offering a range of adventures for those who dare to explore.
The northern lights, often referred to as the “dance overhead,” may also be visible, adding an extra touch of magic to the experience. Due to its extreme remoteness, communication is limited. According to BBC reporter Laura Hall, the only method of communication was a satellite phone, which connects to orbiting satellites rather than traditional towers.
Inside the hut, guests will find a small stove for cooking, a sink, and a composting toilet. Kitchen essentials like utensils and bins are stored in cupboards, making it easy to prepare meals. There is also a small deck where visitors can sit outside and take in the breathtaking views.
Beside the bed, there is an ice fishing hole that is 180mm wide, providing a unique opportunity for those interested in fishing. The hut is equipped with a clothes rack and cool food storage, but there is no shower. Instead, guests are encouraged to embrace the cold and take a dip in the freezing sea, as described by Laura.
The nearest settlement, Sermiligaaq, is located along the east coast and has a population of just 209 people. Nearly 500 miles away, the next closest community, Ittoqqortoormiit, is home to only 345 residents.
The Airbnb listing describes the experience as “epic views, tranquillity, and magic.” Despite being fully booked, the next available dates for one person are from July 2 to 3, costing £783. So far, the hut has only one review, but it is filled with praise. The visitor described the accommodation as “spectacular” and highlighted how the hut “gently rocks with the water” while gushing over the “views and tranquillity.”
