The Vision for Africa’s Digital Economy
At the inaugural Global Perspectives summit hosted by CNN, Olugbenga “GB” Agboola, founder and CEO of Flutterwave, presented his ambitious vision for Africa’s digital economy. He described Flutterwave as a “payment superhighway,” aiming to enhance both intra- and inter-African trade by linking the continent to the global market and vice versa.
The summit, themed “Africa’s Role in a Changing World,” gathered public leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators to discuss how Africa’s emerging economies and its young population can lead a new era of inclusive and sustainable global growth.
Agboola participated in a session titled “Fueling the Next-Generation Startup Ecosystem,” which featured Lucy Liu, co-founder and president of Airwallex; Alex Okosi, managing director of Google Africa; and Serigne Dioum, CEO of MTN Group Fintech. The discussion was moderated by CNN anchor Richard Quest.
Challenges and Progress in Regulation
Agboola acknowledged the challenges posed by Africa’s fragmented regulatory environment, which increases the cost of scaling businesses. However, he noted that progress is being made. He highlighted the recent memorandum of understanding between Ghana and Rwanda, aimed at streamlining cross-border fintech operations, as an example of positive developments.
“Across the continent, regulators are very impressive. They understand how to enable the networks of growth and are focused on empowering players who have the infrastructure and understand the market,” Agboola stated. He emphasized the crucial role of regulation and infrastructure in sustaining the momentum of Africa’s startup ecosystem.
Other panelists shared Agboola’s optimism regarding Africa’s regulatory evolution and potential for digital transformation. Alex Okosi pointed out that regulators increasingly recognize the need for open markets, while Lucy Liu noted that their priorities often focus on ecosystem integrity and protection. Serigne Dioum added that there is a shared vision between regulators and operators to drive financial inclusion and economic dignity.
Pioneering Payment Methods and Future Vision
Reflecting on Africa’s success in pioneering alternative payment methods, such as Kenya’s M-Pesa and Nigeria’s Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc (NIBSS), alongside widespread mobile money adoption, Agboola outlined his vision for a connected continent where money moves as freely as ideas and innovation.
“What’s been missing is the interoperable infrastructure that connects these systems. At Flutterwave, we’re building that payment superhighway that allows businesses and consumers to move money seamlessly,” Agboola explained.
This vision continues to guide Flutterwave’s growth and strategy, with initiatives like its recent partnership with Polygon to build Africa’s largest infrastructure for stablecoin payments.
