The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic death of two of its students in a motor accident that occurred on Saturday at Powerline Junction, inward Ikorodu Roundabout. The university released a statement clarifying the incident and addressing recent media reports that suggested three students were involved.

According to the statement issued by the Head of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Olanrewaju Kuye, only two students from LASUSTECH were among the deceased. The statement emphasized that no other students were involved in the accident, and none are currently receiving medical care in any hospital.

  • Ayomide Jagun, a 300-level student in the Department of Mechatronics Engineering, College of Engineering and Technology.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority reported that the accident was caused by an unregistered truck loaded with sand that suffered brake failure, leading to multiple collisions, injuries, and fatalities.

University Takes Immediate Action

In response to the incident, the Vice-Chancellor of LASUSTECH, Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, has taken charge of the situation to ensure a proper response and support for all affected parties. He has reportedly contacted the General Hospital, Ikorodu, and the Divisional Police Officer of the Shagamu Divisional Police Station. Additionally, he has been liaising with key university officials, including the Dean of Student Affairs, Director of Health Services, Heads of the affected Departments, and Deans of the respective Colleges, to coordinate assistance for the bereaved families.

The Students’ Representative Council has also been actively involved in the ongoing support efforts. The Vice-Chancellor has given directives to support the families of the deceased, and this process has already begun.

Reaching Out to Families

The university is directly reaching out to the parents and guardians of the deceased students to offer comfort and ensure that arrangements for a befitting burial are made. In a heartfelt message, the Vice-Chancellor extended his deepest condolences to the families of the departed, the entire student body, staff, and all stakeholders of LASUSTECH.

“Our hearts ache with the families and the university community. We pray that our beloved students rest in peace and that God grants the families the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses,” the statement read.

Commitment to Safety

LASUSTECH reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and well-being of all members of its community. The university continues to prioritize measures that ensure the security of students and staff, especially in light of recent incidents.

Previous Tragedies

This is not the first time that LASUSTECH has faced such a tragedy. In February 2025, a similar incident occurred when a newly admitted student, Emmanuel Nweke, fell from a two-storey building in the Ikorodu area. The incident took place around 4:00 pm on the balcony of Nweke’s apartment at the Lasunwon First Gate, a predominantly student-populated area.
