A businessman from the Eastern Cape has had his second attempt to gain bail rejected by a court. The Gqeberha High Court ruled against him on Tuesday, denying his appeal for release. The man in question is Rob Evans, who is accused of murdering his girlfriend, Vanessa van Rensburg, using a whisky bottle during Easter weekend this year.
Vanessa, a 36-year-old mother of two, was found with 23 injuries covering her body on April 20, 2025. Her body was discovered sprawled on the floor of Evans’ holiday home in Oyster Bay. This tragic event led to Evans being arrested at his business, Algoa Plastics, located in Newton Park on May 9, 2025, and he has remained in custody since then.
Evans initially sought bail, but his request was denied by Humansdorp Regional Court Magistrate Deidre Dickson on July 9. Following this decision, he filed an appeal. His legal team, consisting of Paul Roelofse and Danie Gouws, argued that several errors were made in Dickson’s judgment.

“In summary, on the evidence as a whole which was presented at the bail hearing, the appellant failed to discharge the onus on the balance of probabilities that exceptional circumstances exist, which in the interest of justice permit his release on bail.”
