SA: My Journey Begins – A Glimpse into My Gender Links

A New Beginning: My Experience at Gender Links

The first day of my internship at Gender Links was filled with purpose, possibility, and a deep sense of connection to the people and systems that drive the organization. As a new intern, I was amazed by the level of detail and structure in place to ensure that everything runs smoothly. This induction day not only introduced me to the team but also provided a comprehensive understanding of the work that Gender Links does and the values it stands for.

Understanding the Vision and Mission

The induction started with introductions from the team members, followed by an overview of Gender Links’ vision and mission. The organization is committed to promoting gender equality, empowering women, and creating inclusive communities across various regions. Its core pillars include:

  • Speaking to human dignity
  • Growth that works for everyone
  • Inclusive governance
  • Peace and security
  • Capacity building

These principles guide every initiative and program that Gender Links undertakes. It was fascinating to see how these values are embedded in the organization’s operations and how they influence the way the team approaches their work.

Organizational Structure and Roles

During the session, we were shown the organizational design, which outlined the different departments and how they collaborate seamlessly. This helped us understand where we would fit in as interns, particularly in roles such as Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) and communications. Accountability at all levels is crucial to the success of the organization, ensuring that everyone contributes effectively to the overall goals.

We were also introduced to Global Affairs Canada, the main funder of Gender Links. Additionally, we were encouraged to explore funding opportunities from other countries like Sweden and Norway. The organization also highlighted other fundraising avenues, such as writing studies and blogs, to generate additional income.

Fellowships and Programs

One of the most interesting parts of the induction was the discussion on fellowships. There are programs like WOSSO (Women of the South Speak Out), which serves as both a fellowship and a fund, and RWVL (Renewed Women Voice Leadership), which focuses on empowering women in South Africa. These initiatives provide valuable opportunities for individuals to contribute to the organization while gaining experience and skills.

A Moment of Awakening

The induction was more than just an orientation; it was a moment of awakening. It reminded me that change begins with knowledge, passion, and purpose. I felt inspired to see myself not just as an intern but as a change maker who plays a role in amplifying people’s voices and stories. Hearing the stories of others made me realize that even small efforts can contribute to a much larger movement.

Looking Ahead

Moving forward, I aim to grow as a facilitator and project manager within the organization. I want to share everything I have learned here so that we can continue to grow beyond recognition. I hope to help build systems that bring us together and create a seamless and united organizational design. Using my skills to amplify the voices of women and girls while promoting gender equality is a goal I am passionate about.

Final Thoughts

I am proud to be part of an organization that believes in empowering women and creating lasting social impact. The induction day was a powerful reminder of the importance of listening to vulnerable community members and sharing their stories. It was an incredible start to my journey at Gender Links, and I am excited to see where this path leads.
