Veterans Condemn Wike After Naval Officer Conflict, Demand Apology

Nigerian Military Veterans Condemn Minister Over Heated Exchange with Naval Officer

A group of Nigerian military veterans has raised concerns over a recent incident involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, during an enforcement visit to a disputed land in Abuja. The confrontation between Wike and a naval officer has sparked widespread discussion across social media platforms and among public figures.

The incident was captured on video and shared with our correspondent. In the footage, Wike was seen engaging in a heated exchange with several naval personnel at a site in the Gaduwa area of the FCT. The minister had arrived at the location as part of an enforcement operation, questioning the presence of military personnel allegedly guarding the land.

According to the video, Wike accused the officers of supporting illegal development activities on the land. One of the naval officers responded by stating that they were following orders and that the land in question belonged to a former Chief of Naval Staff. The situation quickly escalated, with Wike reportedly using harsh language against the officer, which drew immediate attention from observers.

Public Reaction to the Incident

The incident has generated mixed reactions online. Some commentators criticized the naval officer for challenging a serving cabinet minister, while others supported the officer’s conduct, arguing that he was simply carrying out his duties.

In response to the event, the Coalition of Military Veterans released a statement through its spokesperson, Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts. The group strongly condemned Wike for verbally insulting the officer during the encounter, emphasizing that a public office holder should not use abusive language against security personnel performing their official duties.

Durowaiye-Herberts expressed concern over Wike’s remarks, particularly the use of derogatory language. “How can a public office holder call an officer ‘a fool’ on camera? If he was responsible, he should have engaged the Chief of Naval Staff privately rather than attempting to disgrace a retired senior officer,” he said.

He added that uniformed officers represent the authority of the Nigerian state, and disrespecting them undermines public institutions. The coalition also criticized any calls for disciplinary action against the naval officer, warning that such actions would be met with resistance.

“If for any reason the officer is punished, military veterans will occupy the office and residence of the FCT Minister,” he warned. The group emphasized that military officers swear loyalty to the country and not to individual public officials.

Calls for Apology and Respect

Durowaiye-Herberts further urged Wike to apologize to the officer, stating that the minister’s actions undermined the dignity of his office. “Wike’s action demeans the dignity of the office of a minister. He should apologise for using abusive language. It is not acceptable behaviour,” he added.

The incident highlights the complex relationship between government officials and the military, raising questions about respect for authority and the appropriate conduct of public servants.
