Wike’s fiery response to military clash

FCT Minister Stands Firm Against Illegal Construction

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has made it clear that he will not be intimidated in his efforts to stop illegal constructions across the territory. His resolve was put to the test when military officers from the Nigerian Navy blocked his access to a site suspected of illegal construction activities in Gaduwa District, along the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way in the FCT.

During the incident on Tuesday, Wike and members of his team, including the Director of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, were prevented from entering the area. The naval officers claimed they were following orders, allegedly issued by a former Chief of Naval Staff who is reportedly involved in construction at the site.

Despite this, Wike emphasized that the FCT Administration will not back down from its responsibilities. He stated, “The way we have carried out our job in other areas is the same way it will be done here. He will not carry out this illegal development and land grabbing, simply because he was a former Chief of Naval Staff. I will not allow that.”

Condemnation of Military Involvement

Addressing journalists after the tense standoff, Wike strongly criticized the actions of the Nigerian Military, calling them an act of lawlessness. He explained that he had instructed FCTA officials to ensure no unauthorized activities took place at the site. However, he was informed that the military had chased them away.

“I was called that the military have taken over the place and I had to come to see things for myself,” he said.

Wike questioned the use of military personnel to protect what he described as a clear case of illegal development and land grabbing. He vowed that such actions would not continue in the FCT.

A Call for Accountability

The Minister expressed frustration over the situation, noting that the former Chief of Naval Staff could have approached his office to explain the matter instead of using military force. He added, “I don’t understand how somebody who attained that position and he sees that he has a problem, cannot approach my office to explain what is going on. Or simply because he’s a military man, he felt he could use that to intimidate Nigerians.”

He also raised concerns about the implications for others without military backing. “You can imagine where you cannot even prove that you have the documents. You don’t have the title documents and you don’t have the approval for building. How can we continue to allow lawlessness to prevail in this country? What about those who don’t have the military? What about those who don’t have security?” he asked.

Commitment to Resolution

Wike confirmed that he has already spoken with the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff, both of whom have assured him that they will take action to resolve the issue.

Conclusion

The conflict highlights the challenges faced by authorities in enforcing regulations against powerful individuals who may attempt to bypass legal processes. As the situation unfolds, the public awaits a resolution that upholds the rule of law and ensures transparency in all development activities within the FCT. Wike’s firm stance sends a clear message that no one is above the law, regardless of their status or connections.
