Accra Court Hears Case of Woman Charged with Illegal Drug Production
A 45-year-old businesswoman has appeared in the Accra Circuit Court, accused of producing and selling local beverages that are suspected to be laced with cannabis. The defendant, Millicent Asamoah Ampofo, is facing a charge related to the unlawful control of a narcotic drug.
The court was informed that during an intelligence-led operation on November 5, 2025, members of the Criminal Investigations Department arrested Millicent at her establishment in Taifa, Accra. A thorough search of the premises uncovered a variety of items that are believed to contain cannabis.
Among the seized items were:
- 47 plastic bottles of sobolo
- 20 bottles of mango drink
- 23 bottles of unidentified liquid substances
- A blue mini drum containing liquid substances
- Two plastic containers of dried plant material
- Two rubber bags containing powdery substances
- 180 pieces of hard brown toffees
The prosecution stated that Millicent admitted ownership of these items during her caution statement. She also mentioned a supplier known only as “Richard,” who is based in Accra. According to her statement, she was responsible for preparing and selling the drinks and toffees. The pricing for the products was detailed as follows:
- Sobolo at GHC5.00 per bottle
- Mango drink at GHC20.00 per bottle
- Toffees at GHC5.00 each
Millicent’s plea was not recorded because the suspected substances have been sent to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for further analysis. The prosecution did not object to bail but requested specific conditions to ensure her presence in court.
The presiding judge, Mr. Kwabena Kodua Obiri-Yeboah, granted her bail in the amount of GHC 50,000, requiring one surety. Additionally, the judge ordered the prosecution to file disclosures.
Authorities are currently working to locate and arrest the individual identified as Richard.
