A Bundle of Integrity: Obasanjo Mourns Former Chief of Staff Abdullahi Mohammed

Tribute to a Distinguished Leader

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of his former Chief of Staff, Major General Abdullahi Mohammed, who died at the age of 86. The late general served in key roles under two Nigerian presidents, contributing significantly to the nation’s political and military landscape.

A Legacy of Service

Major General Abdullahi Mohammed held the position of Chief of Staff to former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo (1999–2007) and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua (2007–2008). His career spanned decades, marked by dedication and integrity. Obasanjo, in a statement released through his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, described the news of his passing as unexpected and deeply shocking.

Obasanjo referred to the late general as a long-standing friend, brother, and colleague, emphasizing his character as a “bundle of integrity and incorruptibility.” He praised the late leader for his patriotic zeal and distinguished service in both military and public life.

Contributions to National Security

During the military regime of General Murtala Mohammed, Major General Abdullahi Mohammed served as the Military Governor of old Benue-Plateau State from 1975 to February 1976. His tenure was marked by dedication to duty, loyalty to the nation, and an example of incorruptible leadership. He also underwent extensive training, becoming one of the early military officers trained as a military intelligence officer.

His expertise played a crucial role in the establishment of the National Security Organisation (NSO), now known as the Department of State Services, following the coup that assassinated General Murtala Muhammad. As the pioneer Director-General of the NSO from 1976 to 1979, he demonstrated competence and loyalty.

A Role in Transition

At the request of General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who was the Head of State between 1998 and 1999, Obasanjo persuaded Major General Abdullahi Mohammed to take up the position of National Security Adviser (NSA) in his regime. His rare courage and contributions to the development of the Nigerian Army were widely acknowledged.

A Trusted Aide

When Obasanjo decided to have a Chief of Staff with a military background during the transition from military to democracy, he sought someone he could trust completely. He found in Major General Abdullahi Mohammed a person who knew him well and whom he could rely on. From 1999 to 2007, he ran his office capably, making Obasanjo’s presidency more manageable. He continued serving in the same capacity briefly under President Umaru Yar’Adua, though his tenure was cut short due to the challenges he faced in the administration.

A True Patriot

Obasanjo described Major General Abdullahi Mohammed as a true soldier and a great nationalist who served Nigeria with dedication and unalloyed commitment. He fought for the unity of the country, striving for a Nigeria where fairness and justice would prevail. Obasanjo emphasized that the history of Nigeria’s struggle for national unity, democracy, and good governance cannot be written without acknowledging the significant role played by the late general.

Final Words of Condolence

On behalf of his family and himself, Obasanjo extended heartfelt condolences to the entire family of Major General Abdullahi Mohammed. He expressed hope that Allah (SWT) would forgive the late leader and grant him Jannatul Firdausi. He concluded with a prayer: “Ameen.”
