Launch of the Movement for Credible Elections

A new citizens-led platform, the Movement for Credible Elections (MCE), has been launched following the National Political Summit held on 11 November 2025 in Abuja. This significant event brought together leading political actors and civil society figures, including Pat Utomi, Usman Bugaje, Femi Falana, Oby Ezekwesili, Ayuba Wabba, Nkoyo Toyo, Bilikisu Magoro, Ankio Briggs, Ene Obi, and San Turaki. These individuals agreed to drive fresh efforts toward electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Summit, convened by the National Consultative Front (NCFront) and the Labour & Civil Society Front (LCSF), drew over 600 delegates from various sectors. Participants included representatives from government, the private sector, civil society, political parties, academia, the diaspora, and other groups. The event was held under the theme “Critical & Mandatory Constitutional Amendments for Credible Elections in 2027.”

Key Contributions and Messages

Goodwill messages and keynote contributions came from several prominent figures. These included former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, former Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former presidential candidate Peter Obi. Additionally, the Summit LOC Chairman Pat Utomi, keynote speaker Oby Ezekwesili, NLC President Joe Ajaero, former presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, and several other political and civic leaders provided valuable insights.

The discussions at the summit focused on the importance of constitutional amendments to ensure credible elections. Delegates emphasized the need for transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in the electoral process. They also highlighted the role of civil society in monitoring and advocating for these changes.

Importance of Electoral Reforms

Electoral reforms are crucial for maintaining public trust in the democratic process. The MCE aims to address key issues such as voter registration, election management, and the prevention of fraud. By bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders, the movement seeks to create a unified front for change.

The summit also underscored the importance of collaboration between different sectors. Government officials, civil society organizations, and private sector leaders all recognized the need for a collective effort to strengthen the electoral framework. This partnership is essential for ensuring that the 2027 general elections are free, fair, and transparent.

Role of Civil Society

Civil society plays a vital role in promoting electoral integrity. Organizations and activists have long been involved in monitoring elections and advocating for reforms. The MCE aims to amplify these efforts by providing a structured platform for engagement and action.

The movement also emphasizes the importance of education and awareness. By informing citizens about their rights and responsibilities, the MCE hopes to foster a more informed and active electorate. This includes initiatives to increase voter turnout and encourage participation in the democratic process.

Future Steps

Looking ahead, the MCE plans to continue its work through advocacy, public campaigns, and partnerships with relevant stakeholders. The movement will focus on pushing for legislative changes and ensuring that the voices of citizens are heard in the policymaking process.

The launch of the MCE marks a significant step forward in the quest for credible elections. With the support of various stakeholders, the movement is well-positioned to make a meaningful impact on the electoral landscape in Nigeria.
