Tribute to a Esteemed Journalist and Community Leader

Sri Lanka recently mourned the loss of a respected journalist and community figure, Ruwan D. Araththanage, who passed away at the age of 73. He was the father of Nelum Araththanage, the Deputy Internal Auditor at Lake House. Known for his dedication to both religious and social causes, Araththanage left a lasting impact on the community through his work and personal contributions.

A Career in Journalism

Araththanage began his career in journalism in 1975 when he joined Lake House, one of the most prominent media organizations in Sri Lanka. His talent and commitment quickly led to a significant role, and in 1995, he was appointed as the Editor-in-Chief of Budusarana, a well-known newspaper. His leadership during this period helped shape the publication’s editorial direction and reinforced its reputation for quality reporting.

After retiring in 2008, Araththanage continued to contribute to the media landscape by serving as the Chief Editor of Sarasavi Sandarasa. This role allowed him to mentor younger journalists and ensure that the standards of journalistic integrity remained high.

Leadership in Religious and Social Activities

Beyond his professional achievements, Araththanage was deeply involved in religious and social activities. He served as the President of the Lake House Buddhist Association, where he worked to promote Buddhist values and community engagement. His efforts in this capacity were widely appreciated, and he was known for his ability to bring people together for common causes.

In addition to his work in media and religion, Araththanage was also a poet. He authored a collection of poetry titledNilla Dakina Thuru, which showcased his literary talents and reflected his deep understanding of human emotions and experiences.

As a father of three, Araththanage was a devoted family man. His children have inherited his strong sense of duty and commitment to their communities. The legacy he leaves behind is not only in his professional accomplishments but also in the values he instilled in his family and the broader community.

Final Arrangements

The remains of Ruwan D. Araththanage are currently at his residence, No. 145, Gonapola Junction, Kumbuka (North). The final rites will be held tomorrow, November 15, at 4:00 pm at the Horana crematorium. Friends, colleagues, and members of the community are expected to attend the ceremony to pay their respects and honor his life and contributions.
