Overview of the Tema Port Expansion Project
The Tema Port Expansion Project, which recently saw the completion of its first two phases, marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s infrastructure development. This modern container terminal is designed to connect Ghana with global shipping routes, thereby supporting the country’s economic growth through improved trade flows and job creation.
The facility was constructed by Meridian Port Services (MPS) and serves as a crucial hub for West and Central Africa. It is part of a joint venture between the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), MPS, Bolloré Transport and Logistics, and APM Terminals.
President Mahama’s Speech on the Expansion
During the commissioning ceremony, President John Dramani Mahama emphasized the importance of the expansion in enhancing Ghana’s reputation as a reliable and efficient trade hub. He highlighted that the project would improve logistics capacity, reduce turnaround times, and increase efficiency, thus enabling Ghana to compete globally.
He described the Tema Port Expansion as one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in Africa’s maritime sector. The project, he stated, represents a significant step towards industrialization, competitiveness, and global trade leadership for Ghana.
“This project is the realization of a dream we have nurtured for years to establish Ghana as a gateway to West Africa. Today that dream becomes a tangible reality, symbolizing a national aspiration and international confidence,” President Mahama said.
Economic Impact and Employment Opportunities
The expansion has not only provided employment opportunities during its construction but also continues to offer jobs in various sectors such as engineering, logistics, and services. Thousands of Ghanaians have found work in different capacities, contributing to the country’s economic growth.
President Mahama noted that the port has become a catalyst for supporting industries like transport, warehousing, hospitality, and maintenance. This has fostered a ripple effect of enterprise and innovation within the economic ecosystem.
Strategic Importance for Africa
The President also emphasized the strategic importance of the Tema Port in the context of the African continental free trade area. With its location in Accra, the port is positioned as a key artery for intra-African commerce.
From Tema, goods can move seamlessly across borders, connecting producers, traders, and consumers throughout the continent. This positions Ghana as a central player in Africa’s trade transformation, driving integration, innovation, and shared prosperity.
Recognition of Key Contributors
President Mahama paid tribute to several individuals who played instrumental roles in the execution of the project. These include the late Alhaji Asumah Banda, former Board Chairman of MPS, and the late Madam Dzifa Ativor, a former Transport Minister. He also recognized Mrs. Joyce Bawa Mogtari, a former Deputy Transport Minister and current Presidential Advisor, for her key contributions.
Perspectives from Industry Leaders
Mr. Mohamed Samara, CEO of Meridian Port Services, described the project as one of Ghana’s biggest and most successful public-private partnerships. He highlighted the synergy between private and public services that made this achievement possible.
Transport Minister Mr. Joseph Bukari Nikpe commended all the stakeholders involved in the project, stating that their dedication has delivered a world-class facility that will serve Ghana and the sub-region for decades.
