Honoring a Legacy: Marie-Immaculée Ingabire’s Impact on Rwandan Journalism
Marie-Immaculée Ingabire, a pioneering figure in Rwanda’s media landscape, was posthumously awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Development Journalism Awards. The ceremony took place on Friday, November 7, at the Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village. Her contributions to journalism and accountability were celebrated by her peers and colleagues, who recognized her as a trailblazer in the field.
The awards, organized by the Association of Rwandan Journalists (ARJ) in collaboration with the Rwanda Media Commission (RMC), Rwanda Governance Board (RGB), and the Association of Rwandan Female Journalists (ARFEM), aimed to highlight the significant roles played by journalists in shaping public discourse and promoting transparency. Ingabire, who passed away on October 9 at the age of 63, was represented at the event by her daughter, symbolizing the continuation of her legacy.
A Career Rooted in Truth and Integrity
Ingabire began her career with the public broadcaster, the former Office Rwandais d’Information (ORINFOR), which later evolved into the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA). She then became one of the pioneer reporters at Imvaho Nshya newspaper, where she gained recognition for her commitment to journalistic excellence. Later in her career, she joined Transparency International Rwanda, where she served as Chairperson until her passing.
Her work extended beyond traditional journalism, as she actively contributed to the development of media structures in Rwanda. In the aftermath of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Ingabire played a crucial role in reshaping and reorganizing the country’s media sector. She was a founding member of both ARJ and RFM, the first Vice President of the Media High Council in 2003, and later served as a commissioner on the Rwanda Media Commission following the 2013 media reforms.
A Celebration of Life and Contributions
Earlier in October, members of the media fraternity gathered at Ingabire’s home in Kicukiro District to celebrate her life and lasting contributions to journalism and accountability. Colleagues described her as a courageous and principled journalist who navigated the sensitive task of post-genocide reporting with integrity and dedication.
Emmanuel Habumuremyi, the Executive Secretary of ARJ, praised Ingabire as a fearless journalist whose “noble heart beat for truth.” He highlighted her embodiment of honesty and devotion throughout her career, emphasizing that she told the truth in both life and work. Her passion and professionalism left an indelible mark on the industry.
Dan Ngabonziza, Chairperson of ARJ, reflected on Ingabire’s lifelong commitment to empowering women. He shared that, just days before her passing, she expressed a wish that any contributions made during her burial should go to her foundation. In response, the media fraternity set aside Rwf2 million to support this cause, honoring her final request and recognizing her enduring passion for women’s empowerment.
A Lasting Influence
Marie-Immaculée Ingabire’s legacy continues to inspire those in the media sector and beyond. Her work laid the foundation for a more transparent and accountable media environment in Rwanda. As her colleagues and peers remember her, they also carry forward her mission of truth, integrity, and empowerment.
