Leadership Transition at AngloGold Ashanti
AngloGold Ashanti plc has recently announced a major shift in its leadership structure. Ms. Maria Ramos, who has served as an independent non-executive director and chairman of the Board of Directors, has decided not to seek re-election at the annual general meeting (AGM) scheduled for May 28, 2024. In response, the Board has unanimously chosen Mr. Jochen Tilk as the new Chairman, pending his re-election at the upcoming AGM.
Ms. Ramos has played a crucial role in shaping the company’s direction since joining the board on June 1, 2019. She took on the position of Chairman on December 5, 2020, and her tenure has been characterized by strong governance, high ethical standards, and strategic oversight. The CEO of AngloGold Ashanti, Alberto Calderon, expressed deep appreciation for her contributions, stating, “We are grateful for Maria’s enormous contribution to AngloGold Ashanti during her tenure as Chairman.”
Mr. Tilk brings a wealth of experience from the mining sector to his new role. He has been an independent non-executive director at AngloGold Ashanti since January 1, 2019, and currently serves as Chairman of the Investment Committee. His professional journey includes leadership roles at Nutrien Inc. and Potash Corp., as well as a 25-year career at Inmet Mining Corp., where he held the position of President and CEO.
Rhidwaan Gasant, the lead independent director of AngloGold Ashanti, acknowledged Ms. Ramos’s impact and welcomed Mr. Tilk’s appointment. “On behalf of the board, I thank Maria for her impactful and principled leadership,” Gasant said. “We are privileged to have someone of Jochen’s experience and track record to lead the board.”
The changes in leadership are expected to support AngloGold Ashanti’s ongoing strategic goals and governance practices. According to data available from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), these transitions reflect the company’s commitment to maintaining strong corporate governance and operational excellence.
In addition to the leadership changes, Ms. Maria Richter, a non-executive director since January 1, 2015, has also chosen not to stand for re-election. Mr. Albert Garner has been appointed to replace Ms. Richter as chairman of the Compensation and Human Resources Committee, pending his re-election.
Ms. Ramos shared her gratitude for Ms. Richter’s nine years of service, highlighting her contributions to aligning compensation practices with industry and governance trends. “We wish her the very best with her future plans,” Ramos stated.
These leadership transitions come at a critical time for AngloGold Ashanti as it continues to navigate the challenges of the global mining industry. The company remains focused on ensuring that robust governance and strategic direction remain central to its operations.
