State Authority Reinforced in Xhariep District

On Friday, 08 March 2023, the Xhariep District continued its efforts to reinforce the authority of the state. The district’s police stations were divided into three teams, each with a specific focus. Two teams conducted compliance inspections at tuckshops, liquor outlets, and second-hand goods dealers, while the third team, based in Zastron, concentrated on cross-border crimes.

Colonel Guma led one team operating in Petrusburg, Lt Colonel Ntoyi was stationed in Edenburg, and Captain Lusasa worked along the border in Zastron. These operations were part of a broader strategy to ensure law and order within the district.

Compliance Inspections and Arrests

During the operation, several individuals were arrested for violating various laws. Offenses included selling expired goods, illegal immigration, possession of illicit cigarettes, operating unregistered liquor outlets, and possession of drugs. A total of twelve shops and five liquor outlets were inspected to ensure they met legal standards.

One shebeen was closed down, and liquor was seized. Additionally, seventy and a half mandrax tablets were confiscated. Expired food items were immediately disposed of after being processed at the police station.

Cross-Border Operations and Seizures

The cross-border operation involved the inspection of ten vehicles and thirty individuals. This effort aimed to tackle transnational crime and prevent illegal activities that could threaten the security of the district.

Those arrested during the operation are scheduled to appear in court on Monday, 11 March 2024. Their cases will be reviewed, and appropriate legal actions will be taken based on the evidence gathered.

The Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Khuto Khuto, emphasized that there is no place for criminals to hide in the Xhariep district. He encouraged the police force to continue their efforts in ensuring that all areas are monitored and that criminal activities are minimized.
