The Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos State became the epicenter of a remarkable celebration as Reuben Abati, a celebrated journalist, broadcaster, and former presidential spokesperson, marked his 60th birthday. The event was not just a personal milestone but also a tribute to his significant contributions to Nigerian journalism and public discourse.
This special occasion coincided with the unveiling of three new books by Abati:Portraits: People, Politics and Society,A Love Letter and Other Stories, andHow Goodluck Jonathan Became President. These publications reflect his extensive career spanning over four decades, combining political analysis, storytelling, social commentary, and creative expression.
A Gathering of Influential Figures
The celebration brought together Nigeria’s most prominent figures from various sectors. Former presidents, governors, diplomats, creatives, and business leaders were among the attendees, all gathered to honor a man who is widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in modern Nigerian journalism.
Among the distinguished guests was former President Olusegun Obasanjo, whose energetic presence immediately enlivened the atmosphere. In a heartfelt speech, Obasanjo spoke about his 30-year relationship with Abati, calling him “my son” and expressing pride in his growth and achievements. He emphasized that Abati’s journey serves as an inspiration for others to continue striving until the end of their lives.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was also present, praised Abati as a “scholar,” recalling their first meeting in 2010. Jonathan highlighted Abati’s intellectual depth, loyalty, and dedication to national discourse, underscoring his significant role in shaping public conversations.

In his keynote address titled “Nigeria: Time to Re-Load,” Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, framed the event as a moment for national reflection. He emphasized that Abati’s work has documented the evolving political and social landscape of Nigeria, serving as a valuable record for future generations.
President Bola Tinubu, in a previous statement, recognized Abati as a public intellectual who has made notable contributions to journalism, academia, and public service. His recognition further underscores the respect and admiration that Abati commands across various sectors.
Memorable Moments and Elegance
One of the highlights of the evening was the cake-cutting ceremony, where the cake was creatively designed as books by Obasanjo. As he counted to 60, Obasanjo delivered a dramatic and humorous performance that drew laughter and cheers from the audience.
Another memorable moment was the matching attire of the celebrant and his spouse, Kikelomo Abati. The couple entered the hall in elegant wine-colored suits, with Abati pairing his suit with a wine bow tie, creating a coordinated and sophisticated look. His wife complemented his elegance with a wine ensemble, exuding grace and regality. Together, they moved through the hall, greeting guests with warmth and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
Distinguished Attendees
The event was graced by several notable dignitaries, including the governor of Abia State, Alex Otti; former governor Gbenga Daniel; and the founder and chairman of Coronation Group, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede. Their presence further highlighted the significance of the occasion and the high regard in which Abati is held.
