A Surprising Turn at Sao Paolo
Among all the race tracks on the Formula 1 calendar, Sao Paolo is one of the most unpredictable. The Interlagos circuit has a reputation for chaos, with its history of wild weather and dramatic twists. It’s often marked as a place where anything can happen, making it hard to predict outcomes before the weekend begins.
However, this time around, Lando Norris managed to secure a clean sweep of poles and wins in both the sprint and grand prix, despite the usual unpredictability. His confidence was bolstered by a dominant performance in Mexico, which set the tone for the Sao Paolo event. The underperformance of his main title rivals, Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen, played a key role in his success, as he didn’t have to face them head-to-head during the weekend.
Verstappen, on the other hand, made a strong comeback on race day. After a difficult Friday and Saturday, Red Bull made significant changes to his car, including a new power unit, allowing him to push through from a pitlane start to finish third. His drive was nothing short of spectacular, even with a puncture along the way.
A Shift in the Championship Standings
The lack of heavy rain in Sao Paolo removed another variable that could have affected the race outcome. Norris capitalized on this, maintaining his composure and extending his lead in the championship. He now holds a 24-point advantage over Piastri and a 49-point lead over Verstappen, with three grands prix and a sprint race remaining in the season.
It’s fascinating to note how the standings have shifted. Just a few weeks ago, Piastri had a 34-point lead over his teammate, but now the gap has flipped to 24 points in favor of Norris. Since the Monza race, Piastri has averaged just 9.5 points per race, while Norris has consistently scored over 19 points per race.
Looking Ahead to Las Vegas
The next stop on the calendar is Las Vegas, the gambling capital of the world. With colder weather and improvements to the Mercedes car, the Silver Arrows are expected to be strong contenders. George Russell won there last year, and Andrea Kimi Antonelli is showing signs of being a front-runner. Red Bull is also expected to perform well in Vegas.
However, McLaren might struggle in this environment, making it challenging for Piastri to close the gap unless Norris faces a retirement. Qatar and Abu Dhabi are likely to be strong races for McLaren, with Qatar also featuring a sprint race. For Piastri to make a significant impact, he would need to score maximum points in those final two events, which seems unlikely if Norris remains consistent.
A Great Weekend for Two Rookies
This weekend also highlighted the performances of two rookies, Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Oliver Bearman. A month ago, the Rookie of the Year award seemed to be between Isack Hadjar and Gabriel Bortoleto. However, Antonelli and Bearman have stepped up significantly in recent weeks.
Antonelli secured his second podium of the season and achieved his best F1 result in second place. More importantly, this was the first time he outperformed his teammate, George Russell, who is having one of his best seasons. Toto Wolff must be pleased with the decision to promote Antonelli, and it’s exciting to think about what the future holds for the young driver. He’s now only 26 points behind Lewis Hamilton, making it possible for him to finish ahead of the seven-time champion in the standings.

Bearman also impressed, giving several frontrunners a scare in qualifying and finishing sixth in the race. This result, combined with his fourth-place finish in Mexico, shows that he is now fully capable of competing against experienced drivers like Esteban Ocon. His performance helped Haas stay close to Aston Martin in the constructors’ championship.

Hadjar continued to deliver solid results, securing eighth place for Racing Bulls. His performance highlights the likelihood of him moving to Red Bull next season, with Arvid Lindblad taking his seat. This means Liam Lawson needs to step up his game in the remaining races.
