A Call for Unity and Support for NRM Leadership
Former Prime Minister John Patrick Amama Mbabazi has made a compelling appeal to the people of Kagadi and the broader Bunyoro sub-region. He urged them to recognize the achievements of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government and to support President Yoweri Museveni in the upcoming 2026 general elections. His message is clear: sustaining Uganda’s socio-economic transformation requires continued backing of visionary leadership.
Mbabazi delivered this message as the guest of honor at the ordination of Archdeacon Elisha Okello at Naigana Archdeaconry in Kagadi District. During his speech, he emphasized the NRM’s development record both in the region and across the country. He argued that these accomplishments should be reciprocated by the electorate through support for leaders who demonstrate vision and commitment to national progress.
A Legacy of Service and Leadership
Reflecting on his own political journey, Mbabazi highlighted his long-standing contributions to Uganda’s development. He mentioned his roles as Prime Minister from 2011 to 2014, Security Minister (2006–2011), Minister of Defence (2001–2006), Attorney General (2004–2005), and Director of the External Security Organization (1986–1992). He also noted his presidential bid in 2016 and his appointment as a special envoy to South Sudan and Ethiopia in 2019.
“I’m among the key founders of the NRM government along with Dr Ruhakana Rugunda and President Museveni,” he said. “I have served in various capacities and I know where Uganda has come from and the path we need to sustain.”
Mbabazi stressed the importance of unity, peace, and development under NRM leadership. He called on residents to reject sectarianism based on politics, tribe, religion, or ethnicity, emphasizing the need for collective effort in building a stronger future.
A Message of Peace and Reconciliation
The Bishop of Bunyoro Kitara Diocese, Rt. Rev. Jacob Atairweho, who officiated the ordination, echoed similar sentiments. He appealed to politicians to prioritize peace, reconciliation, and forgiveness over personal interests. Quoting the book of St. James 3:1-12, he warned about the power of words, stating, “The tongue is small, but if not used properly, it can ruin your life. It has great power for both good and evil.”
Newly ordained Archdeacon Elisha Okello also called on Christians to avoid political violence, hatred, and division. He advocated for reconciliation and peace-building, reinforcing the importance of unity in the face of challenges.
Encouraging Women and Voters to Support Transformation
Kagadi Woman MP Jennifer Mbabazi rallied women in Bunyoro to support President Museveni in continuing transformational programs. She highlighted initiatives such as skilling hubs, the Four Acre Model Farms, and parish development models, which have contributed significantly to community growth.
Buyaga East MP Eric Musana urged voters to elect leaders who focus on community development and reject opportunists who prioritize personal gain over public interest. His message resonated with the broader call for responsible leadership and civic engagement.
The Path Forward
As Uganda approaches the 2026 general elections, Mbabazi’s message underscores the importance of recognizing past achievements and working towards a shared future. His call for unity, supported by the voices of religious and political leaders, highlights the critical role of collective action in driving national progress.
With the challenges and opportunities ahead, the emphasis on peace, development, and visionary leadership remains central to Uganda’s journey. The path forward will require not only political support but also a commitment to the values that have shaped the nation’s growth.
