Two UPDF Impostors Arrested with Toy Guns in Iganga

Accusations of Impersonation and Fraud in Ugandan Election

Police in Iganga District have arrested two men accused of impersonating Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officers and using toy pistols to deceive a political aspirant. The suspects, Derick Mugumira and Wycliffe Walujo, are currently being held at Iganga Central Police Station while investigations continue.

According to Busoga East Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Michael Kasadha, the suspects were identified as Derick Mugumira, 30, a truck driver from Bugomba Village in Luuka District, and Wycliffe Walujo, 24, a shopkeeper from Kasokoso Zone in Iganga Municipality.

Mugumira allegedly approached a political aspirant for the Iganga Municipality parliamentary seat in October 2025, introducing himself as a UPDF captain attached to the Senior Command and Staff College, Kimaka. He reportedly told the aspirant that he commanded a team capable of helping her win the election if they were financially supported. Mugumira is said to have demanded Shs3 million as initial facilitation for the purported operation.

The aspirant became suspicious and reported the matter to police, prompting an investigation. Preliminary findings revealed that Mugumira had acquired two toy pistols to help him disguise as a UPDF officer. This discovery led to further action by law enforcement.

On Sunday, November 9, 2025, Mugumira met his accomplice, Walujo, and the two went to collect the toy pistols before proceeding to Ntinda Valley Guest House, where they expected to meet the aspirant and receive payment. Security operatives, who had been deployed to monitor the meeting, arrested the suspects upon arrival.

The suspects are now detained at Iganga Central Police Station pending further investigations. Once the investigations are complete, they will be charged in court. ASP Kasadha emphasized the importance of political aspirants working closely with police and reporting any suspicious individuals claiming to offer electoral support or security services. He warned that such individuals are fraudsters exploiting the political season.
