Mahama Launches Poultry Initiative in Kumasi on Wednesday

Launch of the Nkoko Nketenkete Poultry Project in Kumasi

President John Dramani Mahama is set to officially launch the Nkoko Nketenkete Poultry Project in Kumasi on Wednesday, November 12. This event marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to revitalize Ghana’s poultry industry and enhance rural livelihoods. The initiative, which was a key campaign promise of the National Democratic Congress during the 2024 general elections, aims to boost domestic poultry production by empowering farmers across different scales—household, medium, and large.

Dr Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, made the announcement about the project’s launch during the Akwasidae celebration at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Sunday, November 9. During this event, he led members of the Ashanti Regional Security Council in paying homage to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene.

Key Components of the Nkoko Nketenkete Project

Under the Nkoko Nketenkete Project, farmers at all levels will receive day-old chicks, feed, and vaccines. These inputs are part of a comprehensive support system that includes a guaranteed buy-back arrangement. Once the birds mature, they will be purchased by the government for processing and marketing under a new national poultry brand associated with the project.

The choice of Kumasi as the launch site highlights the Ashanti region’s crucial role in Ghana’s agricultural transformation and rural development agenda. By equipping smallholder and household poultry producers with essential inputs and securing a ready market, the project is expected to create more economic opportunities for rural farmers, youth, and women.

Details of the Launch Event

Wednesday’s launch will include the unveiling of the Nkoko Nketenkete brand and an outline of how households and small producers can enroll in the program. This event is anticipated to draw attention from various stakeholders and community members who are eager to participate in the initiative.

For the Ashanti region, the project represents a strategic opportunity to strengthen local economic activity, enhance employment, and position the region as a model for agribusiness-led growth within Ghana’s development framework.

Agricultural Significance of the Ashanti Region

The Ashanti region has long been a major player in the poultry industry, with well-known names such as Darko Farms, Boris B Farms, Akate Farms, Nfum Farms, and many others leading in the production of poultry products for both local and international markets. This strong foundation provides a solid base for the success of the Nkoko Nketenkete Project.

Broader Implications for Ghana’s Food System

More than just an agricultural initiative, the Nkoko Nketenkete Poultry Project serves as a strategic pillar in the Mahama administration’s drive to transform Ghana’s food system. It emphasizes promoting self-reliance in poultry production and empowering communities through sustainable livelihoods.

Stakeholders across the agricultural value chain are closely watching the project’s launch, hoping it will deliver tangible results and long-term benefits on the ground. The initiative is seen as a vital step towards achieving food security and economic growth in Ghana.
