Photos of the Week: President Suluhu Sworn In, Kalonzo Honors Raila

Political Developments and National Events

President William Ruto recently oversaw the groundbreaking of two significant projects: the Kaishan Olkaria Geothermal Power Plant and the Kaishan Olkaria Fertiliser Plant in Nakuru. These developments mark a major step forward in Kenya’s energy and agricultural sectors, with the geothermal plant set to produce 165.4 MW of power and the fertiliser plant expected to generate 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia and fertiliser annually. The project is being undertaken by the Chinese engineering company Kaishan Group Co. Ltd through its subsidiary Kaishan Terra Green Ammonia Limited, which has signed a steam supply agreement with KenGen.

In a separate development, Tanzania held its presidential election, resulting in the declaration of President Samia Suluhu as the winner. She was sworn in for a new term on Monday during a ceremony held at a military parade ground in Dodoma. The event took place under tight security, with uniformed officers, senior government officials, and dignitaries in attendance. Although the public was not allowed to attend, the proceedings were broadcast live by state-run TBC, enabling citizens to follow the ceremony from their homes. Samia received 98% of the vote, and she took the oath of office before the Chief Justice, standing before the national flag and flanked by military honour guards.

Honoring a Political Legacy

In a symbolic gesture of respect, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka honoured his longtime political ally, the late Raila Odinga, by delivering dozens of cattle to his Opoda Farm home in Bondo, Siaya county. Reports indicated that Kalonzo brought approximately 100 cattle, showcasing a grand display of admiration for the former Prime Minister. This tribute followed Raila’s death on October 15, which triggered widespread grief and recognition across the country and beyond.

Natural Disasters and Government Response

The Marakwet East region faced a devastating mudslide triggered by heavy rains, leading to displacement and widespread destruction. Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen led search and rescue operations, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. He stated that the government was working tirelessly to account for all those affected and to provide support to the community. “We are coming face to face with the devastation the tragedy left in its wake and racing against time to save lives and reassure a distraught community that we share in their pain,” he said.

Political Mobilization and Strategy

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta attended a Jubilee Party grassroots leaders meeting in Murang’a, where he was accompanied by Party Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i. The gathering aimed to consolidate support in the region, with leaders discussing political strategies and the future direction of Mt. Kenya. The meeting focused on grassroots mobilisation, party cohesion, and strengthening the party’s influence in the area. Party insiders noted that this event is part of a broader plan to rally support for Jubilee candidates and ensure alignment with the party’s vision for Mt. Kenya.

The week saw several notable events, including the swearing-in of Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu, the symbolic tribute to Raila Odinga, and the groundbreaking of major infrastructure projects in Kenya.
