Devastation in Southern Brazil
A severe tornado has wreaked havoc across southern Brazil, resulting in the loss of six lives and leaving hundreds injured. The storm, with winds reaching up to 155 mph, struck the state of Parana late on Friday, causing widespread destruction in a matter of minutes.
The town of Rio Bonito do Iguacu was particularly hard hit, with approximately 90% of the area destroyed. Images from the scene show homes reduced to rubble, with roofs torn off, power lines down, and vehicles overturned. The impact of the tornado was so intense that it left an almost complete trail of devastation in its wake.
Impact on the Region
In addition to the loss of life, around 60,000 homes in the region have been left without power following the storm. The affected areas include Rio Bonito do Iguacu, which has a population of nearly 14,000, and the nearby city of Guarapuava. Among the victims are three men aged 49, 57, and 83, two women aged 47 and 14, and another man who was 53 years old. One person remains missing, and rescue efforts continue to locate those still unaccounted for.
Over 750 people have been treated for injuries, and approximately 1,000 individuals have been displaced. Injured residents, including children and pregnant women, were rushed to hospitals and on-site medical units. At least ten people required surgery, with nine remaining in critical condition.

Rio Bonito do Iguacu’s mayor, Sezar Augusto, described the situation as catastrophic, stating that 80% of the town was “on the ground.” He highlighted the heavy rainfall and the extent of the damage, noting that power lines had been knocked down, roofs ripped off buildings, and structures destroyed. Many people were caught in the storm while returning home, and several vehicles were found under the rubble.
He added that there were at least three deaths, including two elderly individuals, and many more injured. Hospitals in the area are overcrowded, and medical teams are working tirelessly to assist those affected.
Paraná Governor Ratinho Júnior called the tornado an “unprecedented catastrophe” in the state’s history. He emphasized the severity of the storm, mentioning that even commercial buildings may not have survived. Silos and gas stations were reported to have collapsed.
Government Response
A state of “public calamity” has been declared in Paraná, allowing the government to implement emergency measures and seek federal support. This declaration is crucial for mobilizing resources and coordinating relief efforts.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and pledged support for the affected communities. He announced that a team led by Minister Gleisi Hoffmann would travel to the region to provide assistance. National Civil Defense technicians and professionals from the National SUS Force are also en route to offer humanitarian aid and reconstruction support.

Climatempo, a Brazilian TV channel specializing in weather forecasts, reported that the tornado is linked to a cold front and could generate wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h in states such as Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo. The storm is expected to move across the sea until Sunday, potentially affecting the coasts of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo.
