Transport Minister Honors KLM’s Impact on Ghana Aviation

A Legacy of Connectivity and Collaboration

Mr. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the Minister for Transport, has praised Air France – KLM for its significant contributions to Ghana’s aviation industry over the past 65 years. His commendation was delivered through a speech read by Mr. Eric Tetteh-Addison, Director for Policy and Planning at the Ministry, during the commemoration of the airline’s 65th anniversary in Accra.

The Minister highlighted the airline’s commitment to delivering quality air travel services, which has not only strengthened the aviation sector but also boosted trade, tourism, and investment between Ghana and the Netherlands. This recognition underscores the long-standing relationship between the two nations, built on mutual trust and cooperation.

KLM’s operations in Ghana began on November 1, 1960, and have since grown alongside the country’s economy. The airline now operates daily flights between Amsterdam and Accra, connecting Ghana to more than 160 destinations worldwide. This consistent presence has played a crucial role in enhancing air connectivity and fostering economic ties.

The Minister emphasized that KLM’s dedication has made it synonymous with reliability, dependability, and innovation. As a trusted partner for millions of travelers and businesses globally, the airline has created jobs, supported local enterprises, and facilitated international trade and cultural exchange. These efforts have significantly strengthened the bilateral relationship between Ghana and the Netherlands.

Mr. Nikpe reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working closely with KLM and other private sector partners to enhance air connectivity, promote tourism, and drive economic growth. He stated that the government will continue to create an enabling environment for private sector players to thrive and support the nation’s development agenda.

He also extended his congratulations to KLM on its 65th anniversary, expressing optimism for continued cooperation and shared growth between Ghana and the Netherlands. The airline’s focus on safety and innovation continues to inspire excellence within Ghana’s aviation industry.

Madam Isabelle Indeweij Gerlings, Air France – KLM Country Manager, Ghana, highlighted the airline’s role in strengthening bilateral relations between Ghana and the Netherlands over the decades. She noted that KLM has facilitated both business and leisure travel, invested in local talent, and supported community initiatives in education, sustainability, and women’s empowerment.

“We thank Ghana for the warm welcome 65 years ago and the hospitality ever since. We are looking forward to the next 65 years and more together,” she added.

According to the Country Manager, KLM’s primary role is to provide essential air connectivity between the region and the rest of the world. This function promotes sustainable tourism and development, ensuring that Ghana remains well-connected to global markets.
