Child Stealing and Trafficking Syndicate Busted in Anambra State
A significant breakthrough has been made in the fight against child trafficking in Anambra State, where authorities have successfully rescued a three-year-old boy and arrested six members of a criminal syndicate involved in stealing and trafficking children across multiple states. The operation was carried out by the Anambra State Police Command, which has been working tirelessly to bring justice to victims and dismantle criminal networks.
The Investigation Begins
The investigation started on September 4, 2025, when a victim reported the theft of her three-year-old son. According to the police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the case was handed over to the Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka. The unit immediately launched an inquiry into the matter, focusing on the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the child.
The complainant had left her son in the care of Samuel Ibe, a resident of Umusiome, Nkpor Uno, while she briefly went to her shop. Upon returning, both the child and Samuel were gone. This incident triggered a swift response from the police, who began tracing the movements of the suspect and gathering evidence.
Arrests and Confessions
Through intensive investigations, the police managed to arrest Samuel Ibe, who later provided crucial information that led to the arrest of his mother, Agatha Ejeweh, and his younger brother, Ejeweh Chigozie Chidera. Their confessions revealed the extent of the network’s operations and the involvement of other individuals in the crime.
Further investigations extended to Enugu State, where Angela Eze, aged 30, was apprehended for her role in facilitating the transfer of the stolen child to Lagos. The police then acted on credible intelligence and moved to Lagos, where they arrested one of the suspects, China Cosmas, and successfully rescued the child.
Reunited with Family
The three-year-old boy has since been reunited with his family in good health. All the suspects are currently in custody and are expected to face legal consequences once the investigations are complete.
A Strong Message from Authorities
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, emphasized the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property. He warned criminal elements that Anambra State will not tolerate any form of illegal activity, reinforcing the message that the police are actively working to ensure public safety.
The Broader Impact
This case highlights the growing concern over child trafficking in Nigeria, particularly in regions where law enforcement may be stretched thin. The successful dismantling of this syndicate serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and the need for continued efforts to combat such crimes.
Steps Forward
As the investigation continues, authorities are likely to focus on uncovering more links within the syndicate and ensuring that all those involved are brought to justice. This operation also underscores the importance of inter-state collaboration in tackling transnational crimes like child trafficking.
