Boosting Bangladesh-South Korea Collaboration: Seminar

Strengthening Bilateral Ties: Korea and Bangladesh Explore New Horizons

In a dynamic global landscape, the need for stronger international partnerships has never been more critical. On Sunday, a seminar held in Dhaka brought together key stakeholders from Bangladesh and South Korea to discuss ways to enhance cooperation in advanced manufacturing and infrastructure projects. The event focused on areas such as road development, port expansion, and power sector initiatives, while also emphasizing the importance of digital transformation and people-to-people exchanges.

The Korea-Bangladesh policy seminar, titled ‘Navigating Geopolitical Dynamics: Toward a Korea-Bangladesh Future Partnership’, was hosted by the Embassy of Korea in Bangladesh. This gathering aimed to foster dialogue among policy experts, academics, development partners, and private-sector representatives to explore new opportunities for collaboration.

Moderated by Ambassador Farooq Sobhan, the seminar provided a platform for in-depth discussions on current geopolitical trends and how they could shape the future of economic ties between the two nations. Key speakers included both Bangladeshi and Korean officials, each bringing their unique perspectives to the conversation.

Key Themes and Insights

Ambassador Park Young-sik, representing South Korea, emphasized the country’s long-standing support for Bangladesh’s development. He highlighted the significance of preparing for the next phase of partnership, noting that Korea’s own journey from an aid recipient to a donor country serves as a valuable model.

“Korea has a unique development experience, having transformed from an aid recipient to a donor country. Just as our cooperation in the RMG sector contributed to Bangladesh’s economic growth, Korea will continue to expand collaboration across trade, investment, and other key areas,” he stated.

One of the central topics of discussion was the ongoing Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations. This agreement is expected to serve as a framework for future economic cooperation between the two countries. Ambassador Park described it as a significant milestone in advancing Bangladesh-Korea relations.

Diverse Perspectives and Collaborative Efforts

Participants at the seminar shared their insights on the evolving relationship between Bangladesh and South Korea. They noted that the two sessions—covering both geopolitical and economic perspectives—highlighted the steady growth of bilateral ties over the past 50 years.

Key figures involved in the discussions included:

  • Ambassador Humayun Kabir
  • Ambassador Mustafizur Rahman
  • Prof Dr Parves Karim Abbasi
  • Dr Selim Raihan from Bangladesh
  • Dr Song Kyungjin
  • Dr Lee Soon-cheul
  • Dr Song Chi-ung from South Korea

Each speaker contributed valuable input, reinforcing the idea that mutual understanding and cooperation are essential for future success.

Looking Ahead

As the global environment continues to evolve, the need for strong partnerships becomes increasingly important. The seminar underscored the potential for Bangladesh and South Korea to work together in various sectors, including advanced manufacturing, infrastructure, and digital transformation.

With ongoing efforts to strengthen economic ties through agreements like CEPA, the future of Bangladesh-Korea relations appears promising. The discussions held during the seminar serve as a foundation for continued collaboration and shared growth.
