Government Confirms Election Will Be Held in Early February
On November 9, the government reaffirmed its commitment to holding the national election in the first half of February, as stated by Law Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul. He emphasized that there is no reason for concern regarding the upcoming polls.
“As the government is determined to hold the election, there is no issue of postponing it. All necessary steps will be taken to ensure a festive atmosphere,” he said while speaking to reporters at the Legal Aid Office of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court building in Rajshahi.
Asif Nazrul highlighted that political parties often make statements that create pressure on each other and on advisers. These statements, he claimed, lead to doubts among the public about the election process.
“There hasn’t been an election for 16-17 years; so naturally there is some anxiety among people. About five crore citizens have never had the chance to cast their votes. So, this election is very important to them, and the people of Bangladesh are eagerly waiting for it with great enthusiasm,” he added.
Addressing Political Tensions
The law adviser also criticized the growing political rift in the country. He mentioned that the Caretaker Government (CA) would decide on the referendum. This statement came amid ongoing discussions about the future of the electoral process and the role of the judiciary in ensuring a fair and transparent vote.
Referring to the bail granted by the court, Asif Nazrul explained that the decision to grant bail does not solely rest with judges. It also depends on police reports. He noted that if there is video footage or recorded voice evidence, it can become an exception.
“Bail can be granted where it is suitable to do so. However, if those who get bail might commit similar crimes, disrupt the country’s law and order situation, harm the environment, or act as members of a banned organisation, then it would be a cause for concern,” he added.
Judiciary Reforms and Backlog Management
Asif Nazrul also spoke about the initiatives being taken to reform the judiciary. He mentioned that three judges are being appointed in place of one in certain courts to ease backlogs.
“We are taking various initiatives to reform the judiciary, and the public will definitely benefit from these efforts,” he said.
These reforms aim to address the long-standing issues within the judicial system and ensure that the election process is conducted smoothly and efficiently.
