A Celebration of Culture and Tradition in Calabar
Calabar was filled with vibrant colors, rich culture, and a spirit of celebration last week as the Governor of Cross River State, Bassey Otu, and his family hosted a grand traditional wedding for his son, Francis Bassey, and Sylvia Oku-Ita. The event, held at the historic Hope Waddell Training Institution, was a stunning display of Efik heritage, elegance, and deep family pride.
The bride, Sylvia Oku-Ita, made a striking entrance in a beautifully embroidered velvet wrapper. She was adorned with layered coral beads and a meticulously styled hairpiece that highlighted her sophistication. The groom, who also serves as a Special Adviser in the Governor’s Office, looked regal in a white usiere shirt, wrapper, and coral accessories. He was accompanied by his Efik brothers, who proudly showcased the royal customs of Calabar.
Earlier in the day, the groom and his groomsmen made a grand entrance in coordinated red agbadas. Among them was Afrobeats superstar Davido, who captivated the audience with his charm and humility. He greeted elders with respect, adding to the sense of tradition and reverence that defined the event.
As the couple exchanged vows, the atmosphere was electric with cheers and heartfelt blessings from the guests. The ceremony was enriched with vibrant Efik dances, rhythmic drumming, and the ceremonial presentation of the groom. One of the most emotional moments of the day was the handing over of Sylvia to Francis, which was met with wide smiles and warm blessings from the elders present.
