Transavia Launches EUR 150M Pet Food Plant in Romania

Expansion into Pet Food Market

Romanian producer Transavia has announced a significant expansion into the pet food industry with the establishment of a RON 763 million (approximately EUR 150 million) factory in Ciugud, located in Alba county. This investment is entirely funded by the company’s own resources, showcasing its confidence in the future of this new venture.

The newly built facility will cover an area of 65,000 square meters and is designed to produce a wide range of dry and wet pet food products. According to Transavia’s estimates, the factory could potentially feed over 11 million dogs and cats annually. This will make it the largest pet food production unit in Romania, as stated by the company. Production is expected to commence in the second half of 2026, marking a major milestone for the company.

Growing Pet Food Market in Romania

According to Euromonitor 2024 data, the pet food market in Romania has surpassed EUR 1 billion (RON 4,929 million), reflecting a 9.7% increase compared to 2023. The market is dominated by dog food, which accounts for 63%, while cat food makes up 37%. However, available market data indicates that less than 3% of cat and dog food sold in modern retail comes from Romania, highlighting a potential opportunity for domestic producers like Transavia.

Strategic Vision and Community Impact

Ioan Popa, president and founder of Transavia, emphasized the company’s vision for this investment. He stated that the project is expected to generate sustainable prosperity in local communities by stimulating businesses in the area, strengthening a network of local partners and suppliers, and creating jobs. At the company level, Transavia aims to increase EBITA from over EUR 100 million currently to approximately EUR 250 million within two to three years from the start of sales, with a significant contribution from the new division.

Diversified Operations and Global Reach

Transavia, which employs around 2,300 people, has a diversified portfolio of operations. The company operates 31 poultry farms and over 10,000 hectares cultivated with cereals for feeding the birds. Additionally, it has a compound feed factory, three slaughterhouses, and a meat processing factory. Approximately 30% of its production is exported to European countries and other international markets, underscoring its global presence.

Future Prospects

With this new venture into the pet food market, Transavia is positioning itself as a key player in the Romanian agricultural and food industry. The company’s strategic approach, combining local development with global ambitions, reflects its commitment to growth and sustainability. As the factory nears completion, all eyes will be on how this expansion impacts both the local economy and the broader pet food market in Romania.
