Tragic Incident in Nandi County
A tragic incident occurred in Nandi county after a late-night drinking contest among friends turned deadly. The event, which involved a group of men competing to see who could finish their drink the fastest, resulted in the death of one individual.

The competition took place shortly after the group left a celebration and proceeded to a wines and spirits bar. There, they decided to challenge each other on who could finish their drink the fastest. According to relatives, the contest was introduced by one of the men who suggested they contribute money for drinks, then turn it into a challenge.
Gifton Tuma, the brother of the deceased, Duncan Kipkemboi, explained how the plan unfolded. “One of the guys with us said we should contribute money for drinks. It quickly turned into a challenge where anyone who failed to finish their drink would pay the entire bill, but whoever finished fast would take the contribution,” he said.
He added that they started drinking quickly to avoid being the one left with the bill. “We were drinking while taking water to help us. Duncan took his drink and swallowed it very fast, then we all rushed to finish ours to avoid paying. Since we all contributed, whoever failed to finish was supposed to pay for everything,” he explained.
The family said Duncan consumed his drink in one go, but shortly after, the evening took a tragic turn. The remaining alcohol was submitted for testing as investigators look into whether the drinks, or the extreme pace of consumption, played a part in the death.
What Police Said Regarding the Incident
Nandi East OCPD, Jeremiah Leariwala, said the men had already been drinking traditional brew at the local event before heading to the bar. “They had attended a celebration where they drank busaa. From there, they went to a wines and spirits shop already intoxicated. When they arrived, they started a competition to see who could finish their drink the fastest,” he said.
Leariwala noted that the rules of the challenge mirrored what the family described. “They agreed that whoever finished the drink given to them would have their bill paid, and whoever failed would pay the full amount. They drank a lot. Some consumed about eight bottles and blacked out. There is a chance the deceased was under pressure,” he said.
Police say Duncan consumed several bottles during the contest before collapsing. He later lost consciousness and could not be revived.
