Anambra Poll: Vote with Conscience, Reps Member Urges Residents

A Call for Free and Fair Voting in Anambra State

Afam Ogene, the leader of the Labour Party caucus in the House of Representatives, has issued a strong appeal to residents of Anambra State to exercise their right to vote according to their conscience in the upcoming governorship election on November 8, 2025. Ogene, who represents the Ogbaru Federal Constituency, emphasized that there should be no consequences for not supporting a specific political party.

In a statement released in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, Ogene highlighted that democracy is founded on the principle of free choice. He argued that denying citizens this fundamental right undermines the democratic process itself.

Ogene pointed out a common misconception that those who do not support a particular government will be deprived of development benefits. He challenged this notion by stating that infrastructure such as roads, boreholes, and schools are meant for all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations.

“In the case of Ogbaru constituency, we have not been considered worthy of enjoying these acclaimed dividends of democracy, yet we are being blackmailed to think that, this time around, except we vote in a particular way, we would be further denied government patronage, an inalienable right of every citizen,” he said.

He urged all residents of Ogbaru and Anambra State to participate in the election without fear of intimidation, coercion, or inducement. According to Ogene, it is a sacred obligation imposed by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to vote for a candidate of their choice.

The Neglect of Ogbaru Constituency

The Ogbaru Federal Constituency has long suffered from neglect by the state government. The only connecting road to the area is in a deplorable condition, which has significantly hindered economic growth. Despite generating substantial oil revenue, the lack of infrastructure has led to severe economic and social challenges.

Farmers and businesses in the region struggle to transport goods to the market, further exacerbating the difficulties faced by the local population. Ogene called for a change in this situation, emphasizing the need for equitable development and investment in the area.

INEC’s Readiness for the Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared full readiness for the governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025, across the 5,718 wards in Anambra State. During a stakeholders meeting in Awka, the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan, announced that approximately 24,000 ad hoc staff will be deployed to ensure smooth operations during the election.

Additionally, about 540 journalists have been accredited to cover the election, reflecting the commission’s commitment to credible and inclusive elections. INEC has reaffirmed its dedication to upholding the integrity of the electoral process.

A Competitive Governorship Race

According to INEC, 16 candidates from 16 different political parties are vying for the governorship position in Anambra State. They are competing against the incumbent governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, who is seeking re-election under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

This election is seen as a critical moment for Anambra State, with voters expected to make informed decisions based on the candidates’ platforms and the promises they offer to address the state’s pressing issues.
