The Role of Independence Park in Mbarara City
Independence Park, located in the heart of Mbarara City, serves as a green space for relaxation and leisure. It also hosts various community events, making it a vital hub for the local population. Established in 1962, the park has become a gathering spot for unemployed youth, who often meet there to discuss ideas and explore opportunities.
A Meeting Point for Unemployed Youth
When a reporter recently visited the park, they observed groups of youth sharing ideas while others were seen sleeping on the grass. This trend has raised concerns among some residents, while others view it as a positive development.
Mr Ambrose Ajuna, who graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Development Studies and has been without a job for two years, often meets colleagues at the park. He explained that they gather to share experiences and enterprising ideas, some of which have proven beneficial.
“I stay in Katete, Mbarara City South Division, around three kilometers from here. Once in a while, I check on colleagues here because we cannot afford expensive places,” he said.
Mr Ajuna mentioned that through their meetings, most youth have learned about opportunities or discussed ideas to help them survive and earn an income. He shared an example of three colleagues who, during a meeting last year, came up with ideas to employ themselves. They pooled resources and rented land in Nyeihanga in Rwampara District, starting a bricklaying business that is now thriving.
Searching for Employment Opportunities
Mr Emmanuel Mujuni, a graduate from Bishop Stuart University, visits the park after exploring offices and business centers in search of jobs. He rents with two other colleagues in Mbarara City North Division and takes different paths as they search for employment. Later in the day, they converge at the park to chart a way forward before returning home.
Official Perspective on the Park
Mbarara City Mayor Robert Mugabe stated that Independence Park is a public place and emphasized that if the youth are using it as a venue to meet and discuss ideas to improve their livelihoods, then there is no problem.
However, Mr George Twesigye, a resident of the neighborhood, expressed concerns that some of the youth who meet in the park could be criminals or potential criminals. He mentioned that while there are good people who come to relax and strike business deals, the park is also a hideout for criminals who come to relax after spending nights tormenting their victims. He believes that the park might be where they plan their next moves.
Security Measures in Place
Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson Samson Kasasira addressed these concerns by stating that security personnel are on the ground to ensure the park remains safe. He added that through intelligence-led surveillance, operations are conducted to arrest individuals who attempt to use the park as a center for planning and executing crimes.
Community Engagement and Feedback
The park continues to play a significant role in the lives of Mbarara’s youth, offering both opportunities and challenges. As the community navigates these dynamics, ongoing dialogue between residents, officials, and law enforcement is essential to maintaining a safe and productive environment.
