15-Year-Old Nigerian Saved from Sex Traffickers in Ghana

Rescue of a 15-Year-Old Nigerian Girl from Human Trafficking in Ghana

A 15-year-old Nigerian girl was recently rescued by the Ghana Police authorities after being trafficked from Enugu under false pretenses. The girl, who was promised a cleaning job, was instead forced into prostitution and eventually found herself in a dire situation. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of cross-border human trafficking, particularly between Nigeria and Ghana.

The police have arrested one suspect in connection with the case, while the main perpetrator remains at large. According to information shared through official statements, the rescue came after the victim’s father reported her disappearance in Nigeria. The police were able to trace the girl and intervene before further harm could occur.

Details of the Case

The Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Western Central Regional Police, Beatrice Turkson, released a statement detailing the events. She mentioned that the victim had been taken from Enugu to Lagos under the guise of a job opportunity. A man named Golden Blessing is believed to have lured the girl, later handing her over to Joy Ogbonna, who transported her to Tarkwa, Ghana.

Upon arrival, the girl was confined in a room and forced into sex work. The proceeds from these illegal activities were collected by Ogbonna. However, a helpful passer-by helped the girl contact her father, which led to her rescue. Medical reports confirmed that the victim was five weeks pregnant at the time of her rescue.

Joy Ogbonna, a 25-year-old woman, was arrested on Monday, November 3, 2025, near Aboso in Tarkwa. She is currently in police custody and will be arraigned in court soon. The police are still searching for Golden Blessing, who is believed to be in Nigeria.

Ongoing Efforts to Combat Human Trafficking

Turkson emphasized the police’s commitment to fighting human trafficking and protecting vulnerable individuals. She also thanked the public for their support and timely intervention. The Western Central Regional Police Command reiterated its dedication to ensuring justice for victims and bringing traffickers to account.

This case is not an isolated incident. Over the past few months, several cases of human trafficking have come to light, involving suspects operating across borders. In August 2025, the Enugu State Police Command arrested a 30-year-old man, Raymond Wonna, for his alleged involvement in transnational human trafficking. Two victims, Miracle Ogar (18) and Angela Kingsley (16), were rescued during this operation.

Similarly, on August 15, 2025, the Lagos State Police Command dismantled a notorious child trafficking syndicate. Eleven victims were rescued, and four suspects were arrested for their roles in recruiting and transporting young Nigerians to Ghana for prostitution.

The Broader Implications

These incidents underscore the urgent need for stronger collaboration between law enforcement agencies in Nigeria and Ghana. Cross-border trafficking continues to be a significant challenge, with traffickers exploiting vulnerabilities among young people seeking better opportunities.

Efforts must be made to raise awareness about the dangers of human trafficking and to provide support systems for potential victims. Education, community engagement, and improved legal frameworks are essential in preventing such crimes from occurring in the first place.

As the investigation into this recent case continues, the focus remains on bringing all perpetrators to justice and ensuring that victims receive the necessary care and support. The police have shown a clear determination to combat this issue, but sustained efforts are needed to make a lasting impact.
