Kogi State Approves 2026 Draft Budget Focused on Shared Prosperity

LAGOS – The Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has given the go-ahead to the 2026 draft budget, which is titled “Budget of Shared Prosperity.” This ambitious budget totals ₦820.49 billion, marking a 35.7% increase compared to the 2025 revised budget. This significant rise signals a new chapter for sustainable growth and inclusive development in the state.

During a press briefing following the State Executive Council Meeting on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Finance, Asiwaju Asiru Idris, outlined the key areas that the budget will focus on. These include:

  • Boosting internal revenue
  • Strengthening debt recovery
  • Fostering a business-friendly environment
  • Deepening public-private partnerships
  • Ensuring project completion

In his statement, Idris emphasized that the 2026 Budget proposals reflect a robust and balanced financial strategy, focusing on enhanced revenue generation, strategic expenditure control, and a strong commitment to capital investment. He added that the substantial increase in both recurrent revenue and capital expenditure highlights the government’s determination to expand infrastructure and improve service delivery. Effective monitoring of revenue inflows and strict fiscal discipline will be critical to achieving the desired outcomes.

The total estimated Revenue (Recurrent and Capital) stands at ₦820,490,585,443. Similarly, the total estimated Expenditure (Recurrent and Capital) also amounts to ₦820,490,585,443. This balanced approach ensures that the state can meet its financial obligations while investing in long-term development.

Security Initiatives and Infrastructure Development

Governor Ododo’s administration is also intensifying efforts to combat insecurity. The Commissioner for Information, Hon. Kingsley Fanwo, highlighted significant progress in the state’s security architecture. This includes measures aimed at enhancing safety and stability across the region.

The meeting also addressed critical issues such as access to clean water, road safety, and land administration reforms. Fanwo noted that Governor Ododo has directed all the commissioners to sink three boreholes each in their Local Government Areas (LGAs) and tasked the Council to take over land consent authority to curb fraudulent deals.

Commitment to Unity and Collective Progress

The inclusive meeting, which included former commissioners, reflected Governor Ododo’s commitment to unity and collective progress. Former Commissioner, Honourable Salisu Sani Ogu, praised the Governor’s leadership, stating, “He has shown a desire to carry everyone along and build on the foundation laid since 2016.”

This collaborative approach underscores the administration’s dedication to fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility. By involving various stakeholders, the government aims to ensure that the benefits of development are felt by all residents of Kogi State.
