Arrest of Five Suspects in Ilorin for Vandalism and Theft

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kwara State has successfully arrested five individuals suspected of vandalizing and stealing electrical infrastructure in the Tanke area of Ilorin, the state capital. The suspects were identified as Samson Akintola (21), Muhammed Zakariya (19), Mohammed Monsur (20), Ibrahim Hamida (19), and Kabir Abubakar (24). They were apprehended around 1:00 a.m. on Saturday during a joint operation involving NSCDC operatives from the Tanke Division and members of the Tanke Community Vigilante Group.

According to a statement released by the NSCDC’s Public Relations Officer, ASC 1 Ayoola Michael Shola, the suspects were intercepted with damaged transformer and streetlight cables that were believed to have been stolen from the Asa Dam and Sapati areas of Ilorin. The recovered items included vandalized transformer cables, streetlight cables, and burnt copper wires.

The preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had engaged in deliberate vandalism and theft of public electrical installations. This act is considered an offense under Section 1(9) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. The suspects are currently in custody and will be charged to court once the investigations are complete. Authorities are also working to identify and arrest any other accomplices involved in the crime.

Dr. Umar Mohammed, the state commandant of NSCDC, addressed the incident in an interview with PUNCH Metro. He issued a strong warning against the vandalism of public infrastructure, emphasizing that such actions hinder development and pose risks to communities through blackouts and insecurity.

“We are committed to protecting all critical national assets and infrastructure in Kwara State,” he stated. “Let this serve as a warning to others: anyone caught sabotaging public utilities will face the full wrath of the law.”

The NSCDC command reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with community vigilantes and residents to safeguard public installations across the state. This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts of security agencies to maintain public order and protect essential services.
