Overview of the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Handball Jamboree
The fifth edition of the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Handball Jamboree is set to take place this weekend, drawing in a significant number of teams from across the region. According to the coordinator, Shisoka Akaka, the event has attracted a total of 41 teams, with 24 men’s teams and 15 women’s teams participating.
Each team is required to pay a registration fee of Sh3,000 to join the competition. Among the participants in the men’s division are the defending champions, General Service Unit (GSU) Nairobi. GSU Nairobi has made it clear that they aim to retain their title this year. On the other hand, the defending champions in the women’s category, Kisiwa Technical Institute, have not yet confirmed their participation.
Akaka, who serves as an assistant games tutor at MMUST, explained that the tournament will also serve as a crucial opportunity for the university to evaluate their teams ahead of the Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF) Western Conference championships, scheduled for November 23 at MMUST.
Return of the Men’s Handball Team
One of the key highlights of this year’s jamboree is the return of the MMUST men’s handball team after a two-year ban. Akaka emphasized the importance of the event for the team, stating:
“This tournament is important for us. Our men’s handball is returning from a ban and we want to test ourselves against the best teams in the country.”
He expressed confidence in the performance of the MMUST women’s handball team, which is the defending KUSF Western Conference champion and is expected to secure top honors in the competition.
Introduction of the Western Region Lacrosse Jamboree
In addition to the handball tournament, the inaugural Western Region Lacrosse Jamboree has also drawn attention. This event is set to be held tomorrow and Sunday, with 12 teams registered. Each team is required to pay a registration fee of Sh3,500.
The lacrosse tournament will feature six teams in both the men’s and women’s categories. Participating teams include hosts MMUST, Daystar University, Kaimosi Friends University, Kibabii University, Kenyatta University, and Sigalagala National Polytechnic.
Awards and Sponsorship
Akaka mentioned that the top three teams in each category—both in handball and lacrosse—will receive awards, including trophies, medals, and balls. The competitions are supported by well-wishers and MMUST handball alumni. Additionally, MMUST itself has played a significant role as a sponsor, providing the fields, preparation costs, ambulance services, eight trophies, and security for the events.
