A Star Athlete’s Controversial Move to Germany
Angelina Melnikova, a 2020 Olympic champion and one of the world’s top gymnasts, has signed with TSV Tittmoning-Chemnitz for the final two rounds of the Bundesliga season. Her move to Germany has sparked significant debate, especially given her political affiliations and the controversy surrounding her role in Russian politics.
Melnikova, who has been designated as a “champion of terror” by Ukraine, is accused of supporting Russian President Vladimir Putin and his actions in Ukraine. She has also been associated with the ruling United Russia party, which has raised concerns among other Bundesliga clubs about the implications of her signing.
Despite these concerns, TSV Tittmoning-Chemnitz’s coach, Tatjana Bachmayer, emphasized that the decision was purely based on sporting reasons. “We didn’t want to provoke anyone, and above all, we didn’t want to make a political statement,” she stated. “We are aware that this could be seen as problematic. But for us, what counts is solidarity in sport and international understanding.”
The club has yet to receive a response from Melnikova regarding the controversy surrounding her participation. Meanwhile, the German government has reiterated its stance on the issue, stating that there must be no instrumentalization of sport for Russian politics. However, it remains confident that this is not the case here.
Controversies and Allegations
Melnikova was cleared to compete internationally as a “neutral” athlete by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) in March after being restricted to Russian competitions for three years. However, Ukraine has questioned this decision, urging the FIG to review its choice.
In an April letter to the presidents of both the FIG and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Ukrainian sports officials cited several instances where they claim Melnikova violated neutrality rules. These included posting a photo on social media featuring the letter “Z,” a Russian military symbol; organizing training camps for children from military families; and raising funds for the daughter of a Russian soldier killed in the war.
These actions have led to her inclusion on Ukraine’s “champions of terror” database. Additionally, Melnikova ran as a candidate for Putin’s United Russia party in local election primaries earlier this year, although she withdrew shortly after, citing the difficulty of balancing politics with sport.
Despite her political involvement, Melnikova’s athletic achievements have been impressive. After returning to the international stage with two gold medals and a silver in Jakarta, Indonesia, she claimed her second all-around world title at October’s world championships. Her performance earned praise from Putin himself, who commended her in a congratulatory message.

A Strategic Move for Chemnitz
Melnikova’s signing is seen as a strategic coup for TSV Tittmoning-Chemnitz, as the club aims to end the 13-year title-winning streak of its Bundesliga rival, MTV Stuttgart. The Deutsche Turnliga (DTL), which oversees the competition, defended the decision, stating that it was following the FIG’s eligibility criteria.
“We primarily see ourselves as organizers of sporting events and as bridge builders whose task is to provide all athletes with a platform to practice their sport in peaceful competition,” said Michael Götz, the DTL’s president. “We neither have the capacity nor the mandate to investigate or evaluate the political actions of individual athletes.”
However, it appears the DTL may have changed its position, as an article published on its website on October 24 suggested that Melnikova’s admission contradicted the world federation’s own neutrality criteria, which exclude any military connection.
foot-care asked the FIG to explain why it had granted Melnikova neutral status but did not receive a response. The German Gymnastics Federation declined to comment, stating that it was a matter for the DTL.
