Political Tensions Rise Over Extended Special Counsel Investigation
On the 7th, Jang Dong-hyeok, leader of the People Power Party, expressed concerns about President Lee Jae-myung’s decision to approve an extension for the insurrection special counsel’s investigation. He stated that the backlash against the administration would likely intensify as the investigation period is prolonged.
Jang made these remarks during a press conference following a real estate policy meeting held in Suji, Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. He criticized the actions of the special counsel, highlighting what he described as a lack of substantive findings and results from their investigations.
He pointed out that the recent request by the insurrection special counsel for a bench warrant against former People Power Party floor leader Choo Kyung-ho had shocked many citizens. According to Jang, the special counsel had not uncovered any significant evidence or achieved meaningful outcomes from their work.
Criticism of Multiple Special Counsels
Jang also voiced his dissatisfaction with the performance of the three special counsels—those handling the insurrection case, the Kim Keon-hee matter, and the deceased Marine Corps case. He argued that none of them had conducted proper investigations into their respective cases.
He further criticized the special counsels for raising the issue of establishing permanent special counsel positions. This, he claimed, was reminiscent of the previous Moon Jae-in administration’s approach, which spent five years attempting to root out corruption but ended up causing widespread chaos and damaging the administration’s reputation.
In addition, Jang expressed concern over the absence of Kim Hyun-ji, the first deputy director of the Presidential Office and a close aide to President Lee, from the previous day’s National Assembly Audit of the Presidential Office. He called this absence a mockery of the public and suggested that the claim that Kim was waiting on-site to attend the session was a fraud.
Extension of the Investigation Period
Earlier in the day, the Presidential Office issued a press release stating that President Lee had approved the final extension of the investigation period allowed under the Insurrection Act on the Appointment of Special Prosecutors, etc., on the 6th. The purpose of this extension, according to the release, was to ensure the settlement of the insurrection and promote national unity through the special counsel’s investigation.
As a result, the insurrection special counsel’s investigation, which was initially scheduled to end on the 14th of this month, has now been extended to the 14th of next month. This move has sparked further debate and criticism from opposition leaders and political analysts alike.
