EPL: Arteta Warns of Tough Sunderland Challenge as Jesus Nears Comeback

Arsenal Faces Tough Challenge Against Sunderland

Mikel Arteta has warned that Arsenal will face a challenging match against Sunderland on Saturday, November 8. The Gunners are aiming to extend their winning streak to 11 matches across all competitions. This game comes after a 3-0 victory over Slavia Prague, which allowed Arsenal to equal the record for consecutive clean sheets by an English club with eight.

Arteta emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards during the match at the Stadium of Light. “It’s not about credit, it’s about doing it, and once you’ve done it, do it again, and that’s what we have to do,” he said at the Sobha Realty Training Centre on Friday. He highlighted the need for the team to train at their best, improve, and ensure clarity in understanding the game plan for the upcoming match.

Despite the impressive run, Arteta acknowledges there is still room for improvement, especially as Sunderland, unbeaten at home this season, awaits. “Everything can improve because you learn from your team every single day, from your players every single day, from the opponents that you play every single time, and that’s information that is so valuable to us,” he explained. He added that the game against Sunderland will be different from previous matches, requiring the team to read and understand the game quickly.

A win would extend Arsenal’s lead at the top of the Premier League table to nine points, ahead of Manchester City’s clash with Liverpool on Sunday. However, Arteta downplayed talk of title dominance. “I don’t agree, I’m sorry, because any team has the capacity and, I’m sure, the belief as well that they can do it. We are fully aware of that. We know our strength, we know the things that we have to improve as well, and we just focus on that. I’m just focused on tomorrow’s game. How crucial, how difficult, and how tough it’s going to be, and that’s the first step we have to make,” he said.

Gabriel Jesus Returns to Training

Arteta also provided a positive update on Gabriel Jesus, who has returned to training after a long knee injury layoff dating back to January’s FA Cup clash with Manchester United. “I’m thrilled to have him. I think he’s going to add something extra to the team that we don’t have, and make sure that very soon we see him on that pitch making an impact for the team,” Arteta said. He noted that Jesus has been working independently and is now adapting to the competitive environment around him. “He’s full of energy. I love the reaction of all his teammates when he first joined us, and it’s great to have him back,” he added.

Injury Updates and Future Plans

Arteta mentioned that several other players, including Viktor Gyökeres, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Noni Madueke, and Martin Ødegaard, remain injury doubts. However, he expects most of them to be close to returning after the international break. “There are a lot of things that have to happen in the next two weeks, and everything has to be perfect, but I think we’ll be very close with most of them to be in a really strong position,” he said.
