A Return to Roots: Gamini Ratnavira’s “Brushes with Nature” Exhibition
Sri Lanka is set to welcome back one of its most celebrated wildlife artists, Gamini Ratnavira, this November. The artist, known for his deep connection to nature and meticulous attention to detail, will unveil his fourth solo exhibition titled “Brushes with Nature.” This marks a significant return to his homeland after more than three decades since his last exhibition in 1985.
The exhibition will take place at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery from November 7 to 9. It will feature 50 original paintings that celebrate Sri Lanka’s rich biodiversity. Each piece reflects Ratnavira’s unique ability to capture the essence of nature with both realism and spiritual depth. His work has garnered international recognition, with pieces displayed in collections across the United States, Europe, and Asia.
The event will begin with an invite-only opening night on November 6, offering collectors and special guests a private viewing of the artwork alongside the artist. Following this, the public exhibition will be open from November 7 to 9, with free admission available to all visitors.
“Nature has always been my greatest teacher and muse,” says Ratnavira. “With ‘Brushes with Nature,’ I hope to share my lifelong journey of observing and painting Sri Lanka’s wildlife, and to remind us of the importance of preserving what we have.”
Born in Sri Lanka and now based in California, Ratnavira has dedicated over 50 years to his craft, blending art with conservation. His career includes designing the Wildlife Department’s official logo, illustrating over 38 Sri Lankan postage stamps, and collaborating with Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, on the Let Them Live elephant conservation campaign.
Ratnavira is also the founder of the Hidden Forest Art Gallery in the U.S., where his works have solidified his position among the world’s leading wildlife artists. Despite his global acclaim, his art remains deeply connected to his Sri Lankan heritage and Buddhist philosophy of coexistence.
