Jigawa State Government and NAPTIP Collaborate to Combat Human Trafficking
The Jigawa State Government has taken a significant step in addressing the pressing issue of human trafficking and irregular foreign migration. The state government has announced its readiness to collaborate with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to tackle these challenges head-on. This commitment was made public through a press statement issued in Dutse and shared with Online Tribune by the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry for Local Government, Malam Najib Umar.
The initiative was highlighted during a one-day sensitization campaign against human trafficking, which was held in Kazaure town, Jigawa State. The event was declared open by the Commissioner for Local Government and Community Development, Alhaji Ibrahim Garba Hannun-Giwa. He was represented at the event by the Director of Social Development in the ministry, Alhaji Muhammad Mukkadas.
The sensitization campaign was organized jointly by the ministry and NAPTIP. Its primary goal is to educate participants from all 27 local government areas on the dangers and negative impacts of human trafficking and illegal migration, particularly among young people. The campaign aims to raise awareness and encourage community members to take an active role in preventing these crimes.
Alhaji Hannun-Giwa emphasized that the administration of Governor Umar A. Namadi remains dedicated to promoting human capital development through every possible avenue. He stated that this can only be achieved when citizens across the 27 local government areas become self-reliant and avoid engaging in or supporting human trafficking. Instead, he encouraged them to focus on opportunities within their communities.
Under the Comprehensive Development Framework of the state and local government councils, efforts are ongoing to create an enabling environment that encourages residents to explore their potential in diverse fields. This, according to the commissioner, will help generate employment and enhance the state’s internally generated revenue.
The sensitization event attracted a wide range of participants, including:
- Heads of Community Departments
- Hisbah officials
- Social Welfare Officers
- District Heads
- Chief Imams
- Members of the Vigilante Group drawn from the 12 local government areas within the Jigawa North-West Senatorial Zone
This collaborative effort between the Jigawa State Government and NAPTIP represents a proactive approach to combating human trafficking. By raising awareness and fostering community engagement, the state is taking important steps toward creating a safer and more secure environment for its citizens.
The event also served as a platform for dialogue and information sharing, highlighting the importance of collective action in addressing complex social issues. As the state continues to implement its development strategies, the involvement of various stakeholders ensures that the fight against human trafficking remains a priority.
Through these initiatives, Jigawa State is setting a precedent for other regions to follow, demonstrating the power of collaboration and community-driven solutions in tackling some of the most pressing challenges facing society today.
