Enhancing Competitiveness of Sri Lankan SMEs in the EU Market
A one-day capacity development workshop titled “Costing & Pricing for the Natural Ingredients Sector in the EU Market” was successfully conducted on October 29, 2025, in Colombo 02. The event was organized jointly by the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) and the Import Promotion Desk (IPD) Germany. This initiative aimed to support Sri Lankan small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the natural ingredients sector by enhancing their technical and market readiness to compete effectively in the European Union (EU) market.
The program was part of an ongoing partnership between EDB and IPD, which focuses on strengthening export-oriented enterprises through knowledge transfer and improved market access. By fostering collaboration between local and international experts, the workshop provided valuable insights into navigating the complexities of the EU market.
Key Technical Sessions
Two main technical sessions were held during the workshop, led by an external consultant from IPD Germany and EDB officers who had previously been trained by IPD. These sessions focused on two critical areas:Costing and Pricing for the EU MarketandPreparation of Technical Data Sheets.
In the first session, participants received practical guidance on determining cost structures, setting competitive export prices, and aligning their pricing strategies with EU market expectations. The discussion emphasized the importance of balancing profitability with competitiveness, ensuring that Sri Lankan products remain attractive to European buyers while maintaining business sustainability.
The second session addressed the preparation of technical data sheets, which are essential for building trust and credibility with EU buyers. Participants were given hands-on instruction on compiling comprehensive product information, ensuring compliance with EU quality, safety, and traceability standards. This knowledge is crucial for SMEs aiming to meet the stringent requirements of the EU market.
A Platform for Learning and Networking
The workshop brought together SMEs participating in the EDB-IPD Women Entrepreneurship Development Programme and the IPD Sourcing Mission. This diverse group of participants created a dynamic environment for learning, experience sharing, and networking. Emerging exporters from the natural ingredients sector had the opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss challenges, and explore potential collaborations.
By bringing together individuals with similar goals, the workshop not only enhanced technical knowledge but also fostered a sense of community among Sri Lankan exporters. This kind of interaction is vital for building long-term relationships and creating opportunities for future partnerships.
Strengthening Technical and Market Access Capacities
The collaboration between EDB and IPD has been instrumental in supporting Sri Lankan SMEs since its inception in 2019. Through continuous efforts to improve technical skills and market access, the partnership has helped businesses become more competitive in global markets.
The success of this workshop highlights the importance of such initiatives in empowering SMEs to navigate complex international trade environments. As Sri Lankan companies continue to expand their reach into the EU market, the knowledge and resources provided by EDB and IPD will play a critical role in their growth and sustainability.
Future Prospects
Looking ahead, the EDB and IPD are expected to continue their collaborative efforts, focusing on further capacity-building programs and market access strategies. These initiatives will be essential in helping Sri Lankan SMEs maintain their presence in the EU market and explore new opportunities for expansion.
With the right support and training, Sri Lankan businesses in the natural ingredients sector are well-positioned to thrive in the global marketplace. The lessons learned from this workshop will serve as a foundation for future endeavors, ensuring that SMEs remain adaptable and resilient in the face of evolving market demands.
