Zelensky Demands Stricter Sanctions After Russian Attacks Hurt 8 in Dnipro

Renewed Calls for Stricter Sanctions on Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has intensified his calls for stronger international sanctions against Russia, following a recent surge in drone attacks that injured eight people in the central Dnipro region. In a statement released on Thursday, Zelensky reported that Russia launched 135 attack drones in one night, targeting several Ukrainian regions, including Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv.

The strikes caused damage to residential buildings and railway infrastructure in Kamianske, where rescuers managed to save five individuals from under the rubble. “It was another turbulent night for Ukraine,” Zelensky remarked. He emphasized that the continued targeting of energy facilities and civilians by Russia highlights the inadequacy of current pressure measures.

Zelensky urged the United States, Europe, and the G7 to impose stricter sanctions and tariffs on Russia’s energy trade and financial sector. He also called for swift action in utilizing Moscow’s frozen assets to support Ukraine’s defense and reconstruction efforts. “It is only fair that the aggressor’s money be used to protect against its war,” he added.

The Ongoing Conflict and Its Global Impact

The conflict, now entering its third year, shows no signs of a ceasefire. The war began on February 24, 2022, when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, claiming it was necessary to “demilitarise and denazify” the country. Moscow asserted that the invasion aimed to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO and to protect Russian-speaking populations in eastern Ukraine.

However, Western nations and Kyiv have consistently rejected these claims, labeling the invasion as an unprovoked act of aggression intended to reassert Russian influence over its neighbor. The war has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, displaced millions, and devastated Ukraine’s economy and infrastructure. It has also triggered a global food and energy crisis, with significant ripple effects across Africa, where many countries depend heavily on Ukrainian grain and Russian fertilizers.

International Diplomacy and Humanitarian Concerns

Amid the ongoing escalation, President Zelensky engaged in a telephone conversation with Kenyan President William Ruto on Thursday. During their discussion, the two leaders addressed the situation in Ukraine and its broader international implications. Zelensky informed Ruto about Russia’s latest attacks targeting civilians and critical infrastructure, expressing gratitude for Kenya’s continued solidarity.

“I am grateful for his warm words of support,” Zelensky said. The leaders also discussed reports of Russia recruiting foreign citizens to join its military campaign, with Zelensky describing the practice as fraudulent and criminal. “We are aware of all the fraudulent methods being used and will work more closely to put an end to them,” he stated.

Their talks also covered areas of bilateral cooperation, with both sides agreeing to continue advancing joint development projects. Zelensky further highlighted the plight of Ukrainian children who have been forcibly taken to Russia since the war began, calling it one of the gravest humanitarian crimes of the conflict. “The focus was on the fate of Ukrainian children abducted and taken to Russia. We will continue to demand their return,” he said.

A Call for Continued Global Attention

Zelensky’s renewed appeal underscores Kyiv’s determination to maintain global attention on Russia’s aggression and to mobilize broader international action as the war continues into another winter. His message emphasizes the need for sustained support and pressure on Russia to halt its actions and address the humanitarian and economic consequences of the conflict.
