Security Teams Seal Off INEC Anambra Office Before Weekend Election

Security Measures Intensify Ahead of Anambra State Governorship Election

As the governorship election in Anambra State approaches, security agencies have taken significant steps to ensure a smooth and secure voting process. The headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been barricaded, with heightened security presence observed in the area ahead of the scheduled election on Saturday, November 8, 2025.

On Friday morning, hundreds of security personnel were seen patrolling the region, while several armored personnel carriers were deployed to block strategic locations across Ekwueme Square in Awka, where the INEC office is located. This move was aimed at preventing any potential disruptions during the critical period leading up to the election.

The security measures have also affected the movement of vehicles in the area. Motorists and other individuals who normally use the road have had to park their vehicles and walk across the road to reach their destinations. This has caused some inconvenience but is considered necessary for the overall security of the electoral process.

Ensuring Electoral Security

According to an INEC official who requested anonymity, the deployment of soldiers and police officers around the INEC premises and surrounding areas is part of a broader strategy to maintain law and order. The official explained that the movement of both sensitive and non-sensitive materials, as well as the ongoing deployment of electoral officials, including ad hoc staff, requires strict security protocols.

“The INEC office was cordoned off as policemen prevented unwanted visitors from entering or exiting the premises,” the official said. “This is to prevent distractions from members of the public and ensure that the electoral process proceeds without interference.”

The official also emphasized that the decision to implement these security measures is made by INEC itself, in accordance with the Electoral Act. The goal is to ensure that all procedures are followed meticulously, maintaining the integrity of the election.

INEC’s Full Readiness for the Election

PUNCH Online reported that INEC has declared full readiness for the governorship election, which will be conducted in 5,718 polling units across the state. The commission’s efforts are focused on ensuring that the election is credible, transparent, and inclusive.

Prof Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of INEC, highlighted the scale of the operation during a stakeholders meeting in Awka. He mentioned that approximately 24,000 ad hoc staff will be deployed to manage the polling units, while around 540 journalists have been accredited to cover the election. These figures underscore the commission’s commitment to conducting the poll efficiently and professionally.

A Competitive Election Landscape

The governorship election in Anambra State is expected to be highly competitive, with 16 candidates from 16 different political parties vying for the position. The current incumbent, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, is seeking re-election under the platform of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA). His challenge comes from a diverse field of contenders, each representing different political ideologies and interests.

This competition highlights the significance of the election, not only for the people of Anambra State but also for the broader political landscape of Nigeria. The outcome of this election could set a precedent for future contests and influence the direction of governance in the region.

Conclusion

With security measures in place and INEC fully prepared for the election, the focus now shifts to ensuring that the voting process is free from any irregularities. The involvement of a large number of ad hoc staff and journalists further emphasizes the importance of transparency and accountability in the electoral process. As the election day approaches, all eyes will be on Anambra State to witness a fair and democratic exercise.
