Group Seeks New Southeast State Amid Renewed Calls

The Anioma State Creation Movement’s Vision for the South-East

The Anioma State Creation Movement has recently renewed its call for the establishment of Anioma State, proposing that it be incorporated into Nigeria’s South-East geopolitical zone. This initiative aims to bring about significant changes in the region, enhancing both its economic and infrastructural landscape.

In a statement issued by the group’s Media Director, Tonnie Oganah, the movement emphasized that the creation of Anioma State would add “real value” to the South-East. According to Oganah, the proposed state would contribute not only human capital but also robust infrastructure to the region.

Infrastructure and Development Potential

Oganah highlighted that Asaba, the proposed capital of Anioma State, already possesses the necessary facilities to function as an effective state capital. He pointed out that Asaba is equipped with a modern international airport, a state-of-the-art secretariat, commissioners’ quarters, high courts, magistrate and customary courts, judges’ quarters, several universities, tarred roads, shopping malls, banks, hospitals, a film village, and federal institutions.

This existing infrastructure, he argued, would save time and resources, as the essential components for governance are already in place. By leveraging this foundation, the movement believes that the creation of Anioma State could significantly boost the region’s development.

Economic Prospects and Strategic Location

From an economic standpoint, Oganah noted that Anioma would contribute over 6,400 square kilometers of dry land to the South-East—an area the region currently lacks. Additionally, the state would offer several rivers and railway lines that could enhance trade and connectivity.

He also mentioned that the proposed state would add over two million people to the population of the South-East, along with oil and gas resources that could complement existing production in Abia and Imo states. Oganah suggested that these resources could lead to an economic boom in the region, potentially reducing crime rates. Furthermore, he proposed that dredging the Asaba end of the River Niger could accommodate larger ships, thereby stimulating business growth.

Social and Cultural Benefits

The movement argues that integrating Anioma into the South-East would help alleviate overcrowding in cities like Lagos and Port Harcourt. By encouraging more Igbo people to return home, the region could explore new opportunities for development.

Oganah emphasized that the cultural and linguistic similarities between Anioma and other South-East states would foster greater unity and collaboration. He noted that the language in Anioma is largely Igbo, and the culture aligns closely with that of other South-East states. This alignment, he believes, would promote harmony and development within the region.

Additionally, Oganah pointed out that the area experiences less erosion compared to many parts of the South-East, making it a favorable location for agriculture and other land-based activities.

Political and Administrative Implications

The movement also highlighted the current administrative challenges faced by the South-East. With only 95 local government areas out of Nigeria’s 774, the region has the lowest number among the six geopolitical zones. Oganah explained that the creation of Anioma State would increase the number of local governments in the region, leading to a fairer share of federal allocations.

He further stated that revenue distribution in Nigeria is based on the number of local governments and states. Therefore, the addition of Anioma would bring more funds to the South-East, supporting the development of the Igbo nation across the 13 states where Igbos are domiciled.

Conclusion

Supporters of the Anioma cause believe that the creation of the state would address perceived political imbalances while simultaneously stimulating economic growth and regional stability in the South-East. The movement continues to advocate for the inclusion of Anioma in the South-East geopolitical zone, emphasizing its potential to transform the region into a more harmonious and prosperous area.
